What’s really this Organisational Units all about? Well, we can’t put the cart before the horse. You need to be familiar with Active Directory in other to understand this.

For understanding purpose, it’s used for logical collection of resources, as well as administration, implementing Group Policy, delegation, etc. Unlike Novell, OU in Microsoft is not used for Security.

Help Desk and OU
Most of the task that helpdesk analysts perform in enterprise environment revolves around the OU that had been delegated to them. How? The ADMINPAK Microsoft Software Installer (msi) does the magic.

Design Strategy
The designing of our OU structure is the most essential factor to consider before we can fully savour the beauty of this wonderful tool.
Our design strategy can fall into any of the category;
2. According to Business Unit
3. According to Organization Structure

Creating OU
This is simple. Yet it can only be created when you have your Active Directory running on your Server 2003 0r 2008 Computer. We can create it using GUI , via Right Clicking you Domain or a Parent OU, and Select New-OU. or Via CLI , by using the ‘dsadd’ utility.

Delegation of OU
This is all about giving a level (not absolute) access, right or privileges to a security group or users so that they can perform designated task.

The rule of the thumb is this: You don’t give someone delegated control over the security group they belong to.
