some water boreholes' life span were short due to the fact that basic geologic and geophysical principles were neglected.
for you to have a reliable water borehole, certaing principles and practices must be put in place, that is, must be followed.
1. In the abscence of good knowledge of hydrogeological environment. Electrical and electromagnetic methods must be used to determine;- the depth to fresh water level, the possible lithology that may be encountered. presence or abscence of saline water, and other parameters for excellent emplcement of water boreholes.
  • 2. Judgement of proposed borehole must not be solely based on nearby waterwells or boreholes. since local geology may not necessary be the same.
    3. the use of screening and perforation lining must be based on detailed study of the borehole environment.
    4. Detailed borehole report must be provided incase of defect and inefficient production of the well.
    5. the hydroaulic charateristics of the welll must be understood before placing a submersible pump.Highier or lower functioning of the pump may lead to partial or total collapse of the borehole.

    Please avoid the use of Quacks or barefoot geologist. I supervised/inspected drilling and construction of a domestic borehole in Lagos. The hired driller was about to stop drilling at about 8m before interuption. why? because he came across a thich shelly clay layer.
    I ask him what difference does it make between the borehole he claims to drill and a well he claims to drill? .
