Re: 2009/10 PTDF OVERSEAS MSC & PHD SHOLARS
It appears the global recession has put pressure on UK universities this year with more graduates than usual choosing to remain in school for postgraduate programmes rather than face a tough job market with diminished employment prospects. Apparently, many schools have already met their quota and, in my opinion, may have a tendency to favour their own undergraduate students in admissions. I've heard quite a number of applications for top schools were rejected, including mine at Manchester University.
I'm a little concerned that some of this year's PTDF scholars will not get the same opportunity to study at what are considered elite schools as those from previous years had. However, I will acknowledge that any chance to study in the UK is still a great opportunity and many times too much emphasis is placed on reputation over substance.
I have been following this thread for some time, and have found the contributions very helpful, particularly those from the past and current scholars who have taken the time to ease some of our insecurities and concerns.

@topson44: pls throw more light...
House, pls I need to know where d intending phd scholars stand in all these. nobody seem to hav mentoned them in past strings. Are we together with the msc scholars or just on our own?- the induction, visa processing, travelling...
Though the list of successful phd scholars is not out yet and it's over a month the interview was conducted in Abuja, can some one who knows help ease my anxiety? May be any previous scholar.
I will really apprecite it.
Thanks!
One house!

Re: 2009/10 PTDF OVERSEAS MSC & PHD SHOLARS
Hello house,
Yes people were called for visa processing and they are still in Abuja. Dont be scared for they are calling in batches. Everyone will be attended to before the induction. There is no cause for alarm, As I said earlier, it is just for visa processing and collection of award letters, it is not for induction.
For your own information, you weill be responsible for your accomodation, feeding, transport, etc. so prepare for they might call the second batch next week.

Re: 2009/10 PTDF OVERSEAS MSC & PHD SHOLARS
@ Everybody.......No need to panic at all........lol....According to What PTDF told us yesterday, Those of us invited to Abuja now are those that already have unconditional offers with schools in the UK, not only that , our unconditional offers have gotten to the PTDF office here in Abuja. As a result and due to the large number of people the UK embassy handles now, they want to start applying for the visas now so that during the induction, the pressure on PTDF AND THE UK EMBASSY WILL BE REDUCED.....
Now let me give u guys some news, There is a document called an ATAS certificate required by the Uk embassy for certain courses; (
http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/fco-in-acti.../weapons/atas/ )..should tell you about that.. so if u can contact your school to know if you need it and if you do, begin to apply online..,it will make things easier for you. Most people going for process Engr like me will need it while those going to say Herriot watts for petroleum Engr will not need ATAS..jUS GET IN TOUCH WITH UR SCHOOL AND FIND OUT.....
I hear the Induction invite was in yesterday's guardian, How true is that and how can we confirm..?will have to go look for it myself.....for now this is the status of things.....They may not invite evryone befor e the induction, those not invited should not panic, they will do their visa processing on time during the induction and will still get their visas on time to travel....will keep u guys posted.....
-
Re: 2009/10 PTDF OVERSEAS MSC & PHD SHOLARS
Hello house, what Uche said is tru, try and check if your course requires the ATAS certificate because without that, your visa will not be processed if your course requires it and it will take between 2 to 3 weeks to process it. So that u can apply for it on time.
-
Re: 2009/10 PTDF OVERSEAS MSC & PHD SHOLARS

As per ASAP.

@ Kaybow
You might want to contact me through email. My email address is [email protected]. If you send me an email, I could communicate alongside or send my number.
Once again, congrats on your admission.
@ Topson 44
How do you mean that u are having problem with GUI? If you have the program loaded on your system, just get some tutorial notes on MATLAB. It should help u. Actually, to fully understand how everything work, you might need to be using it to work first. Just learn the basics and familiarise your self with the syntax and command for now.
@ All,
Its your time of enjoyment, so go for it. Those for days will forever be engraved in your memory, at least you will start to taste what it is supposed to be for Nigerians, I mean the better and enjoyments!

Re: 2009/10 PTDF OVERSEAS MSC & PHD SHOLARS
Hi all..,
This is for all PTDF scholars going for the induction next week.....For those of you flying., we should find a way to meet at Abuja airport on sunday (for those flying iin on sunday)... The cost of a taxi from the airport to anywhere in abuja is fixed at =N=3,500 but this can be greatly reduced if two or 3 people share the cab..Im talking from experience....anyone interested and coming in on sunday afternoon should contact me on [email protected] and lets arrange....look foward to meetimg you guys at the induction
-
Re: 2009/10 PTDF OVERSEAS MSC & PHD SHOLARS
@ Uche7869, great and thoughtful of you. If people could connect that would be great.... I would however advice that if you do not see anyone to pair with there is Airport Shuttle which is relatively cheaper. It goes for about =N=800. You might have to drop and take other cabs to the destination. Wishing all a safe arrival @ Abuja on Sunday.
-
Re: 2009/10 PTDF OVERSEAS MSC & PHD SHOLARS
WHATS D 411
UNA DON GET VIZA??
I DON RESIGNM 4RM WORK, WAT ABOUT U GUYS??
C IN ABUJA
-
Re: 2009/10 PTDF OVERSEAS MSC & PHD SHOLARS
@Majikme, the airport shuttle would be a really good idea...as long as it gets into abuja main town, a taxi from anywhere withtin town to the intl conference center at central area shouldnt cost more than =N=400 bucks at most....But where exactly does the airport shuttle take off from cos all I could see the last time I was at there was only the regular taxis...thanks for the info.....
@Chairman 1, I would have advised you to wait till after then induction to resign..But then again its your choice and unless ur pretty sure you'll be among the batch travelling early in september..That should depend on ur school's resumption date ..
-
Re: 2009/10 PTDF OVERSEAS MSC & PHD SHOLARS
@uche 7869, i believe resigning now is good so that each scholar can plan well and rest. it is necessary to cool off a little. most school resume 2nd week in September and the induction is for most schools is i1t or 2nd week in September.
i have resigned also cos i need to rest having worked hard through out the year; this is imperative before i face real studies in a new environment.
i look forward to seeing all of u at the induction. i know that by God's grace it will be a refreshing moment. have a safe trip. God bless

Re: 2009/10 PTDF OVERSEAS MSC & PHD SHOLARS
Dear Houz, De-wise
Can anyone assist with the following information (i cudnt get it from the PTDF site)
1. Are the materials used to prepare for the test (after being short listed) based on the area you choose in your applications form.e.g someone who is going for reservoir engineering will have to read in that field for the test...OR wll the test be basically maths, english, verbal reasoning e.t.c
2. Someone posted that 2 academic referees are needed...my question is does it have been be academic...i have been working for almost 2 yrs now.
3. The requirements states the applicant must be Nigerian....can a Nigerian (to the core) who graduated from kenya apply.
4. Lastly can someone advise on how i can get the past questions.
Will be grate if anyone who knows about this can reply.
keep up the good work! :)

@rapito,
what do u mean by reading between the lines in this circumstance
-
Re: 2009/10 PTDF OVERSEAS MSC & PHD SHOLARS
@ Fahimself
Question is in parts
part 1 is usually 50 quest OBJ drawn from different areas, oil & gas, geology, environmental, history, nigerian current affairs, world news, etc.
part 2 is usually an essay writing - divided into different sections, each section for a course or group of courses as the case may be. so u need to go to the section that is for your field of study and choose a question there to write on.
part 3 is theory - also divided into different sections as in part 2. Go to the section where your course of study is and attempt all the questions.
yes, they require two referees.
If you are a Nigerian, and you meet other requirements (2.1 in Engineering, Geosciences, Science & Environmental Studies, NYSC discharge certificate, Not more than 30 years for MSc and 40years for PhD, Must have a credit in English Language in SSCE or required pass mark in TOEFL or IELTS ), you are eligible to apply notwithstanding where you studied.
The question is not in any shop, but there are some soft copies which some guys posted. You may need to check previous post. For now i don't hav any clue.

hi, even though I am not one of u guys, I am currently doing my MSc here in the uk n i thot id chip in. Pls try to take as minimal stuff as u can. u certainly dont want to hav excess luggage when leavin naij. i doubt ptdf wud pay for that one oH! but all the same, carry ur warm clothes as winter is fast approachin. jeans, tshirts, shirts, cardigans or sweaters if u hav, if u hav not, not to worry, u can buy them cheaply here. trainers or sneakers wud b a bonus too! ur allowance shud b sumthin like 23kg x 2 cases. carry books (old notes and textbooks) u feel are relevant to ur course. it helps sumtimes, like to reread a topic, but this time, ur readin it in ur own words or in familiar words of ur naija lecturer. for those of u textbook crazy naijas who can read evry, no worries, ul c textbooks in the libraries here, itl blow ur mind!
for those asking about matlab, its not a biggie. wen i came here, i had no clue about the language, now, its a different story. i can code evry!! lol! but yea, as byfocus said, u just need to know the basics, the syntax etc and as the applications come up, ul learn more. no1 expects u to b a master coder at this stage. n u always hav ur tutors and lecturers to help u.
its rly not like naija, where ul b scared of even goin up to meet ur lecturer to greet him. here, u call them by their first name, n they are always there and willing to help. they smile and say a warm hello wen u jam them in the elevator. ul b assigned a tutor (a lecturer, kind of like ur course adviser just this time, hes rly nice) to help with any extra stuff u require n to advice on all issues scl related.
its been a rly fun experience for me. in such stark contrast to wot ive always known as normal in naija. but ive luvd experiencing the best of both worlds sha. wudnt trade my time in naija or here for anything.
i wish u all the best. relax, ur time of joy and success is here!! peace
