Learn about the company
If you are sending a resume to 50 companies, should you learn something about all 50 of them? The answer is yes. If your cover letter makes reference to something that relates to that company, it is much more likely to receive favorable treatment. With the Internet it is easy enough to learn about the company, the industry of which it is part, the key personnel at the organization, and news relating to the industry.

Step 3
Use a persuasive pattern
A persuasive pattern letter opens by trying to gain favorable attention. Next it demonstrates your capability for the job. It ends by calling for a specific action.

Step 4
Gain favorable attentionThis is where knowledge of the company can make a difference. Has a key leader in the organization written an article or made a speech? Is there a new development in the industry? If your cover letter makes a reference to what is going on in the company or in the industry, the person who reads the letter is more likely to view your application favorably.

Step 5
Demonstrate capability
This is where you tell what you have done that shows your capability to do the job for which you are applying and how you can be an asset to the company. As in the resume, use active verbs to show how your work has benefited the company for which you worked:I helped develop a new procedure for inventory control. This procedure saved the company over $100,000 within a year.During the shift leader’s absence, I took responsibility for keeping the crew working efficiently.

Step 6
Call for an action
Ask for a specific action at the end of the letter. Typically that would be a request to call you to set up an interview.Your research will teach you something about the company. You can use that insight into the company to create favorable attention at the beginning of the cover letter. The middle part of the letter will demonstrate your capability to do the job. The letter will end will a request for an interview.
