ANOMALOUS MATHEMATICS, CAN YOU SOLVE IT?

    RIDDLES SCIENTIFIKA

    TITLE: ANOMALOUS MATHEMATICS

Three friends visited a familiar restaurant, they bought N100 worth of meal each, on leaving the restaurant the Manager recognized them as his old Customers he ordered the waitress to refund N50 from the N300 paid by them. The Waitress a little confuse on how to share the N50 naira among these three customers, she withheld N20 and refunded N10 each to them.

In other words each customer paid N 90 and the waitress withheld N 20, now calculating back the total money transacted.

    (i.e. N 300)

    ( N 90 X 3 ) + N 20 = N 290

    Customer Waitress Money transacted

This is less than the actual money transacted, so who is withholding the deficit N10

I've sent my view for this ambigous mathematic but to be candid this scenario occur every day in business enterprises, and some smart waitress, clark, sales girs/boys feast on such excesses.

Laz4rich, we need such fun, post more....

U WANT TO CONFUSE US. THE CUSTOMERS ACTUALLY PAID 93.333333 NAIRA NOT 90. 93.333333333 multiplied 3 = 279.999999999. which is appox. 280.
    280 + 20 = 300.

Re: ANOMALOUS MATHEMATICS, CAN YOU SOLVE IT?

THAT IS GOOD OF YOU MAN!

    I LOVE THAT.

ACTUALLY, THE THREE GUYS PAID N300.00

SUBTRACTING N50.00 AS INSTRUCTED BY THE MANAGER FROM THIS AMOUNT GIVES YOU N250.00

SO, IF THE WAITRESS REFUNDED N10.00 TO EACH OF THEM,

THEN THE TOTAL AMOUNT PAID BY THIS GUYS BECOMES N280.00

AND EACH GUYS PAID N280.00/3 = N93.3333333333 AND NOT N90.00 AS YOU QUOTED

ADDING THIS TOGETHER WITH THE N20.00 WITHELD BY THE WAITRESS = N300.00

    GOOD BUSINESS!!!!

if 3 of them paid #100 each and later #10 was deducted from each of them.it then means that what they actually paid was #90 each. Therefore to get initial amount you multiply #90 by 3 which will give you #270+#30=#300.The #20 in question is not relevant in this mathematics.Thanks.

    Teacher no teach me nonses
There is no missing N10, the the boys got N10 each, plus N90 they paid, that's N100 each and N300 cumulative. the simple thing there is that the waitress was supposed to refund them N16.67 each but she returned N10. So she took N6.67 from of the boys.
The maths the guy did there was illogical. It should be:
    250+30+20=300
    Or (90*3)+30=300
    Or (90*3)+30=300= 250+20+30
the 20 withheld is irrelevant and inconsequential to the maths
    Don't confuse people.

Re: ANOMALOUS MATHEMATICS, CAN YOU SOLVE IT?

    N300 - N50 = N250 Current cost of meal
    N100 - N10 = N90 Amount paid by each
    (90 * 3) = N270 - N20 = 250
There is no existent N10 as the current cost of meals is N250 and not N300

Talking from Actuary Perspective who I am, if the 3 guys paid #100 each, then the Mathematics can be solved thus:
The total money paid by the 3 guys=3x#100=#300
Less refund the Manager order the Waitress=# 50
    Total amount paid = #250
Amount payable by each guy #250/3 =#83.33333333
Add the #10 refunded to each guy by waitres=#93.33333333
There4, the toatal amount paid by the 3 guys is #93.33333333x3= #280 (appr)
Then add the #20 withheld by the waitress i.e (#280+#20)=#300

THUS; THE #10 IS SHARED AMONG THE 3 GUYS AT A RATE OF #3.33 EACH

    Guys!

Don't be confused, its a type of mathematics that divorced arithemetic we were tought in schools. Such a question required thinking outside the box and we should not be surprised if wemeet such a question in technical / reasoning interviews.

It is proved beyond doubt that the guys pay N90.00 each, The Waitress willingly pocket N20.00, and The Manager collect N250.00 leaving the N10.00 to balance our book/equation.

Just proved who pocket the remaining N10.00...

Mind you, breaking this jinx will expose a way by which (smart) business attendant acrue wealth to themselves... and reason why many sales journal/book may not balance at the close of trasaction...

The 10 naira deficit is infact the customer's..QED. They paid 270naira, she withheld 20 naira, and gave them 30.

Re: ANOMALOUS MATHEMATICS, CAN YOU SOLVE IT?

    Hey Guys!

Here is the true picture of the whole transaction, because Laz4rich on successed in netting some of us in confusion.

The 3 friends, at the end of it all, paid N300 and were later given N10 each, ie. N30, hence they paid N90 each, ie. N270, only!
Now, the waitress on her part collected N300 from them and wanted to return N50 but ended up returning only N30. It then means that the waitress had with her N300 - N30 =N270.
The figure in highlighted never took place, hence the N10 issue is not relevant at all. And that is where laz4rich caught us in the net.

Well thanks to those that got the real thing. Mathematics is always like that, but if you understand it, you have solve 50% of it. Cheers all!!!

What N10 are you looking for?

The Three paid N100 each; Total Payment: N300
    Actual Discount (to them) 30
    The waiter cut 20

    The owner was expecting N250 and N300 minus (N30 + N20) = N250
So, what N10 are you talking about?
