Solve this question if you know you are good..

Age group under 35 - Average number of daily commuters is 425600 under age 35 this year.

    Rail commuters 43%

    Car 9%

    Subway 27%

    Bus 12 %

    Others 9%

Question - If the number of bus passenger who are under 35 decreased by 0.8% next year , and 11% of this age group travelled by bus, approximately how many commuters would be under 35.

Solve and put your answer here...

Number of those who commuted by bus this year = 12 % of 425600= x

Number of those who would commute by bus next year = x- 0.8% of x = y

Number of those who would commute by bus next year = 11% of z = y

where z is the total number of commuters under 35, so find z.

Use your calculator, if you know x, then you know y, if you know y, then you know z

    Quite easily done

    Re:

According to data on age group below 35,
average no of daily commuters = 425600
    commuters who use buses as a means of transportation = 12/100 * 425600 = 51072 (present yr)
a decrease in bus passenger by 0.8% next yr can be expressed mathematically as:
    51072 - 0.008(51072) = 50663.4 (next year)
    commuters who enter buses as a means of transportation next yr = 11% * t = 50663.4
where t is d average no of daily commuters next yr.
    Hence, p = 50663.4/0.11 = 460580 approximately.

@Yemmi-- It would have been nice if you can outline it with figures because from what you explained here. You seems to be wrong except am missing something out.
    From you explaination

    Number of those who commuted by bus this year = 12 % of 425600= x -- where x = 51,072

    Number of those who would commute by bus next year = x- 0.8% of x = y -- where x which is 51072 - 0.8% of x which is = 408.6 in subraction detailed... 51072 - 408.6= y where Y would be = 50663.4

Number of those who would commute by bus next year = 11% of z = y -- 11% of 425600 = 46816 = Y like you said. Now we have two values for Y, they 408.6 and 46816, --- Blunder in representation..Or what happened here.

    Further as you said If I know X? x = 51072
    iF i know Y? y(1)= 408.6
    if i know Y y (2)= 46816
    if i know z? Z= 425600

Sorry you got it wrong or misplaced... Try and fine tune properly for others to understand.

Re: Solve this question if you know you are good..

This type of question is very easy and should be solved in a minute. If someone cant solve this they will most likely find it quite difficult to pass any mobil or chevron type numerical test as i have taken 2 mobil tests and seen questions from chevron. So please its not a matter of "solve this if you are good". I advise anyone having issues with such questions and is hoping to pass a premium oil company test should do a lot of practicing before the test date...

Re: Solve this question if you know you are good..

lol@ adexzy. I'm just making a point. The question is a one minute question for me. i would have helped out if i saw it earlier. What im trying to say is u need to practice more so that u can be comfortable with such questions as these questions are quite familiar with shl for mobil and chevron, even harder ones. The more u practice the more comfortable you will become. Another word of advise when solving these questions try to be able to them in your head without calculators as one of the mobil tests i did calculators were not allowed. Strategy is round of the numbers as short as possible. ie take of decimals and estimate alot because the options the answers will most likely not be close(eg. a:10 b:200 c:500 d:900) so instead of trying to be pinpoint accurate just estimate and get answers closest to the answer option and choose that..Have a blessed day and may God bless your endeavours..
