About the Organization:

The Listening House Foundation (TLHF) is a registered Non- Governmental Organisation located in Abuja, Nigeria pioneered for early intervention, education and support of deaf preschool children (aged 0-5 years) and their families. The Listening House Foundation is dedicated to making available to every parent/ caretaker of a hearing-impaired child the option of following the Auditory-Verbal Education Program. It advocates for early diagnosis of hearing loss, prompt fitting of hearing aids or cochlear implants and high quality early childhood intervention services.

Our Mission:
To bridge the existing gap of the absence of functional early intervention and rehabilitation centers for deaf preschool children in Nigeria by providing the option of an Auditory-Verbal Education program for deaf preschool children who use hearing technology such as hearing aids or cochlear implants, and enabling these children develop their listening and spoken language skills to their full potential in today's hearing world.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
The primary purpose of this position is to provide individual and small group instruction in auditory-verbal skills for Early Years Preschool Children who are hearing impaired and use assistive listening devices(Cochlear implants, Hearing Aids & Baha) aged 3-6 years. This organization makes use of two curricula; SPICE, an Auditory Training Curriculum and HighScope Preschool Curriculum. This position will maintain the day to day operations in the program.
Position will maintain day to day operations in the program. It also serves as a liaison to the administration staff regarding program issues and needs. Knowledgeable regarding implementing assigned curricula, the implementation of daily-prepared lessons, utilization of acquired and accumulated materials, resources, and manipulatives, to include assessing and documenting students’ progress and performance. NOTE: Lesson plans and/or assessment documentation must be presented for review to supervisor upon request.

Monitoring and troubleshooting amplification and FM systems. Placement of auditory trainers as needed, Fostering language development via academic work, inclusion type setting and repetition. Collaborating with general education teachers and special education staff, Modifications of curriculum, materials and environment as necessary, In servicing students, parents, teachers, and other special education staff as necessary. Communication to parents on student progress/consistency of amplification. Developing reports following assessment, Scheduling and writing Individual Educational Plan (IEP). Collect, organize, maintain and share information during the student’s IEP meetings and for other reports. Perform related activities such as: advise and support staff, planning instructional activities; attend to individual problems relating to student progress, performance, or behavior; preparing report cards; supervising and instructing teaching assistants; gathering and/or preparing instructional activities; attending committee meetings and in-service workshops; planning and implementing field trips; and administering required assessments. Assist administration as needed with student, parent, and staff activities. Communicate with other programs (residential, student support, etc.) on and off campus. Serve as liaison between the residential, academic staff, parents, and local educational agencies, etc. and serve as resource person for other schools. Administering, proctoring, compiling, submitting any and all state mandated tests, portfolios, and inventories. State policies/procedures for testing are to be upheld at all times.

This is a full time position that works forty (40) hours per week Monday – Friday, 7:00AM to 4:00 PM.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES / COMPETENCIES:
An ideal candidate, in addition to auditory-verbal training, will have considerable knowledge and understanding regarding functioning, behaviors, needs, problems and attitudes of children who are hearing impaired and who may have additional disabilities; knowledge of child development and ability to develop rapport with children; and general knowledge of State and Federal Laws, and school policies. The candidate should have the ability to communicate with students utilizing appropriate Auditory and language goals. The candidate should have the ability to comprehend and implement curricular objectives, to create and implement appropriate daily lesson plans and exercise good judgment in observing and recording behaviors, academic progress, etc.; to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instruction and to quickly analyze situations and make decisions; ability to use a computer accurately and to make and count change; and ability to prioritize, organize, is patient, uses initiative and complete duties effectively and efficiently and to perform duties and functions independently with minimal supervision.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree or above in Teaching Area, 1-3 years teaching experience working in a preschool setting, Successful Applicants will get the opportunity to learn an innovative teaching technique qualifying as an Auditory-Verbal Educator/ Habilitationist
