Finally out... Eurocode Interactive DVD.
Introduction
It is over two years now that the use of British standards has been replaced with the 58 parts of Eurocodes (March 31, 2010). The British standard committee has made it clear since that time that all public works should be design in accordance with the new eurocode. They also made it known to the public that there would be no amendment or revision of the British standards. That's the BS will soon be obsolete in the nearest future.
Old users of British standards-students, graduates, engineers and relevant professional bodies, companies, etc- we are all need to provide answers to the following questions.

How many Nigerians are aware of this replacement? Recent study has shown that more than 80% of civil engineers, graduates, students and lecturers have not heard about this replacement.
Do we know the consequences of using the old British standards on the standard and quality of our academic research, design and quality of our projects?
Do we know the flaws in BS8110?
Do we think that our academic research in universities will still be acceptable in the global knowledge using the old code as reference?- when it has been clearly stated that there would be no amendment or revision of the old British standard.
Are we sure that we are not lagging in this country?
Are we working towards the development of our own code? If YES, how?
Are we developing our own code from the previous code without resolving the flaws in the previous code?
Are we developing our own code based on the ideas of some practising engineers? That is not done in any country. A code should be developed along with experimental research.
Are we involving academic scholars or researchers to channel their research towards the development of our own code? Do we even have funds available for this?
Are we developing just an aspect of a code-structural design? What of other areas such as highway, geotechnical, steel design, etc

Do we even welcome contributions from scholars towards the development of our code? -Nobody is an embodiment of knowledge.

Do we even know that the eurocode is flexible and allow each country to choose their own parameters based on their own construction practices, standard and quality, weather conditions, human behaviours to structures, etc. - This is called Country National Annex to Eurocode.
We all know that is not easy to develop an effective design code especially when our experimental research in the country is deteriorating and alarming.

Even the owner of old British standards now uses UK National Annex to Eurocode. Similar procedure is being adopted in South Africa where they even have their own design code. This acknowledges that it will take years for our own code to be effective.

What is the fate of our students and graduates even if engineers are reluctant to adopt the new knowledge?
I know this country is endowed with great positive thinkers and reputable scholars. But are we sharing the knowledge? - The best teacher is not the one who possess the highest qualifications but one who can EFFECTIVELY disseminate the little he knows.

I am not of the opinion that we should suddenly drop the old British standard but this is high time we got acquainted with the new ideas.

In view of this we have made an interactive DVD titled “Fundamentals of Eurocode Desgn” to provide answers to the aforementioned questions.

We are looking for companies and organisations to be part of this great success by becoming a sponsor or donor. We hope to give FREE Licence of this DVD to universities, polytechnics and other non-profit educational organisations only in Nigeria subject to the level of sponsorship we receive. We also hope to make this available to Nigerian students and graduates at a VERY affordable cost. The DVD is hoping to be available in the same manner with our last publication which is on sale in more than 7 countries.

About the Interactive DVD

It can be used to teach design of concrete structures at Undergraduate level, organise tests and quizzes.
It can be used to broaden the knowledge of graduates at Postgraduate level and enhance their research works to meet the current global knowledge.
It can be used to organise public and office presentations by organisations or companies- to train your staff especially in the area of Eurocode design and improve their competency.
In general, it can be used as a further learning material, expand your design horizon and competency, enhance job opportunity and stay abreast of the latest developments.
