The most important thing is that you need to have passion for the job because for a daycare centre you really ought to love children and have what it takes to take care of babies with different temperaments and at varying stages of development. You must be patient and tolerant. You need to be energetic, with the ability to run around from one child to the other; you require a pleasant personality that retains a level of stability amidst the chaos that can ensue when more than three or more toddlers get cranky and are in need of immediate attention and need to be a good role model. Education is not really necessary, if you have it, it’s a plus.

THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE START-UP.

  1. REGISTER YOUR BUSINESS WITH THE RELEVANT GOVERNMENT AGENCIES-You have to register your crèche with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and then you will have to process your legal documentation. If you need a Sign Post indicating the location of your facility, you need to go to the Local Government Office and the Lagos State Advertising Agency (LASAA) to register with them. The size of the Sign Board you want to erect will determine how much you would be charged.
  2. FIND A GOOD LOCATION-You need a good location. Make sure that you find a facility that is easily accessible, a place where parents can come in easily to drop and pick their children
  3. ATTRACTIVE COLOURS-Firstly, you must choose a cool and very attractive colour for the outside of your building. And then indoor, you can use several combinations of cool and bright colours that children will find attractive and fascinated with.
  4. PUT THE PROPER PLAY TOYS TOGETHER-You need to get the right type of toys. Depending on the age group of the kids you want to bring in. In most crèches, they have children between 3 months to 2 years of ages. And there are different toys for different age groups. So you have to put that into consideration. Get the appropriate toys for each age group. Make sure that you put together both electronic and educational toys to provide more fun for the children.
  5. ASSEMBLE THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT-You have to equip the place with electronic like Television Set and a DVD Player. You could also subscribe to DSTV or HiTV, so that the kids can always Watch Cartoon. Each room needs an Air Condition System. You need a Generator. Kids don’t like dull environment.
  6. A FRIDGE IS VERY IMPORTANT-This is needed mainly because of working mothers who are still breastfeeding. Some of them put their breast milk into feeders and you keep them in the refrigerator and when the baby needs to be fed you warm the milk and feed the baby.
  7. YOU NEED A PLAYING GROUND FOR THE KIDS-The playing area is also essential. It must be quite spacey. Remember, children enjoy a lot of running around; both indoor and outdoor. If they have Car Toys, Bicycles or Walkers, they must have enough space to move around. Your indoor play area should be rugged from wall to wall rather than tiled. This is because when the children are playing, they have the tendency to fall and rugs will make playtime much better and safer than tiles. And of course you need to vacuum your rug regularly.


A REST ROOM IS A MUST.
The sleeping room also matters. For children even though they are small, they need to rest. So they must be trained to rest and sleep at a particular time. Each age group should have separate sleeping rooms because of the size of beds. You cannot compare the bed of a 3 months old baby to that of a 6 months or 1 year old baby.

FIND THE PERSONNEL THAT FIT THE BILL.
You need the right personnel for the job because you cannot do the job alone. They have to be passionate and caring about kids. Not every adult, as may have noticed, can manage or care for a baby. They shouldn’t be just working because of the money that they will be paid at the end of the day. They have to love kids. Preferably, women who are mothers are the best hands because they have more experience about children. And you must give them adequate training from time to time and also add constant reminders.
Also, they should work on shift. Here at Princeton Royal, our personnel work on shifts because when you care for little kids fatigue can easily set in. it is better you don’t stress your personnel because the babies need so much attention and tender care. A staff that has been stretched can easily become grapy, a situation you want to avoid with toddlers and little kids when you run a crèche.
Like every other organization, a crèche should also have standards and policies that must not be compromised. You must keep up with the standards and not lower it. Always work towards improving standard.

HOW DO YOU GROW YOUR DAYCARE SUCCESSFULLY?

  1. AWARENESS-For the business to thrive and grow, you must print fliers or posters and circulate them within the neighbourhood. It is a good medium for reaching more people. You can take them to Hospitals, Supermarkets and centres where they have contacts with parents or expectant and nursing mothers. Also distribute them in Corporate Offices like Finance Houses, Law Offices, Media Houses etc. you can also share your fliers from street to street. You can also do Radio and Television adverts. But most importantly, your service should be the number one thing to advertise. That is why it is important that you have passion for the job because it will enable you to render good and quality service. And you would start getting referrals.
  2. TOP-NOTCH SERVICE-Before, you can become a brand so much work must go into marketing your crèche. And this does not happen in a day, it is gradual. It is a business that you must keep investing and investing in. there is no end to what you are investing as far as your brand is concerned. Asides’, taking care of the kids, their education also matters, their well being, their physical growth as well as their mental development. All these are essential. So you have to take your time to do your homework so you can impact the children because the foundation they have now has a lot in determining what they can become in future. You should also create an environment where children don’t want to go home because they are already at home. They should feel at home. That is why you need a conducive environment. If possible, you can purchase a CCTV, so that they could be closely monitored. This is essential when you are not around and they are in the hands of your nannies. You can review it later on to see how they were taken care of and how they are fairing. Even, when you are around, you can monitor them while they are sleeping and you are in your office. You can also use it to monitor their improvement from time to time. In some crèches, they supply food but it is advisable to allow parents bring whatever they want their babies to eat. And their water has to be strictly bottling water. Sachet water shouldn’t be allowed. At Princeton, we also encourage fruits. We prefer to give fruits for babies to snacks because fruit are natural and they are very good for the body. If a baby doesn’t come in on a particular day as expected, we call the parents on phone to ask them “we have not seen our baby today” hope all is well, so even the parents will see the love you have for their children. This is so important for most parents and this is how you win their trust.
  3. FAMILIARIZING WITH EACH CHILD-There is no baby that you would not need to mentor. Each baby has his or her own characteristics/ behavior. Just like adults, at times, you might be quiet and at times, you may be an extrovert. You have to identify yourself with each child and study each one of them. If a child is usually quiet, so many factors can be responsible, the child may be hungry, sick, maybe having pains his or her tooth or belly or even soiled his or her pampers. And you would be wondering why the baby is crying or been aggressive or even withdrawn. So you ought to take note of the change in their moods and try to discern what the problem is and find a solution. You must also know what interests each child. Maybe the Television, Pictures, Kiddies’ Progarmme, etc. whatever they find attractive, they will concentrate on.
  4. COMMUNICATION-You have to study a child and know how you would treat the child or how to handle the child. You don’t handle children the same way. You may have to handle them differently. But, in all you do, it must be evident that you love them and you care for them. And you must be ready to go the extra mile for them to make them happy because they are your kids. And that is where passion comes in. You must be able to come down to their level. You must be able to interpret their unspoken words because they communicate too.
  5. INTERACTING WITH PARENTS-Most times, when parents come in to drop their kids in the morning they are always in a hurry but in the evening, when they come to pick them up, you can interact with them and talk about your observation and the activities of their kids during the day. On your registration form get the contact number of their mothers, fathers and also that of the doctor in cases of emergency. Here at Princeton, during the course of the day, if there is any message that we want to pass across especially to mothers, we do call them on phone or send them messages. Then we also do reminders and put them in the Babies’ Bags. This happens when for example, a Baby’s Nails or Hair has to be cut, and there is something they must put in their Babies Bags. Asides from the parents, it is only one other person that is allowed to pick up the kids and the person must be formally introduced by the parents.

You need to be patient and persevere. It is not a business that you would set up and you would suddenly have a crowd.
