Head of credit - NIGERIA

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

A South African bank with operations throughout Africa is looking to urgently fill the role of Head of credit. Looking for a dynamic, ambitious and action-oriented individual to execute the Bank Africa’s credit strategy and help set-up the bank’s operations in Nigeria.
This role will suit a South African who is ambitious to make his mark in Africa or a Nigerian national who wants to work for an international bank.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Partner with Personal and Business Bank (Sales) and Corporate and Investment Bank at country level in setting strategies and achievement of Business growth and profitability targets.
Ensure Origination (Deal input quality, Deal Tracking)
Provide expert advice to Business Partners on credit risk. Portfolio analysis credit assessment and management as well as internal control.
Decision-making pertaining to credit assessment of applications and account serving as per authorised delegated lending authority.
Ensure Fulfilment (Right legal skills and process in place)
Oversee the early identification of potential problem accounts in respect of both wholesale and retail and ensure that the necessary actions are taken to correct negative findings.
Manage Collections / Recoveries
Establishment of a strong credit team, ensuring that all the required credit evaluation, retail credit and credit support functions are adequately and timely addressed.
Ensure that people development frameworks and processes, including recruitment and selection, performance management, talent management, leadership capacity building and developing people in the context of future capacity requirements are implemented and utilized.
Ensure compliance with both local (in country) and South African Reserve Bank regulations.
Ensure that local Policies and Procedures pertaining to credit risk are in place, conform to the bank’s Africa’s Policies and Procedures and best practices and are at all times complied with.
Portfolio Management (Business solicitation acquisition strategy)
Ensure that information generated in the operating environment meets the needs of the business partners and is in accordance with Personal and Business Banking credit’s mandate, policies and procedures.
Establishment of a prompt and orderly turnaround environment with adequate controls and systems to address the risks encountered in all aspects of the credit management function.

The Ideal incumbent will possess:

Minimum post-graduate honours degree in Finance.
Business qualification (MBA / MBL) advantageous.
A Firm knowledge and understanding of advances, credit criteria, policies and procedures, risk & financial analysis, credit control and the application thereof.
Analysing financial statements/management accounting.
Report writing together with business analysis.
Sound understanding of all existing and/or potential industry sectors there are/could be lending exposures and display principles of good lending.
Management of credit risk & Portfolio management.
Collection process and procedures.
Knowledge of regulatory environment governing financial services.
Knowledge of commercial law, accounting, economics and marketing.

They should have strong communication skills, an ability to work independently, well-developed analytical skills and highly results- oriented. Should be able to influence at board level & be customer oriented.

EXPERIENCE

Banker with a minimum of 5 years general banking experience to provide a broad based understanding of the various business units.
Plus 5-7 years experience in both Wholesale and PBB Banking Credit (General Manager)
Personal mandate necessary.
