    FACTS AND FIGURES

    Jumbo Salary for Nigerian Police

    By Victor Segun Olomola

Only very few Nigerians realize that members of the Nigeria Police Force have been receiving new jumbo salary packages which took effect from January 2008 on the approval of the Presidency.

The Economic Confidential magazine discovered that an official circular which announced the new salary structure, put the effective date for the implementation of the new CONPOSS is January 1, 2007. Interestingly the 12 months arrears have been paid. According to a media report Police spokesman Agbiebi Akpoebi was reported to have confirmed that: "No police officer is being owed. All arrears from January to December 2007 have been paid."

The Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONP-OSS) has pushed up the salary and allowances of all categories of police officers from Assistant Inspector General of Police to the newly recruit into the force.

The circular signed by the chairman of National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Chief F.O. Williams, listed the items consolidated with the basic salary as transport allowance, meal subsidy, utility, leave allowance, hazard allowance, house maintenance allowance and uniform allowance. Others include general services allowance, torchlight allowance, detective allowance, hardiness allowance, plain cloth allowance, furniture allowance and personal and servant allowance for entitled officers.

The Inspector-General, Mr. Mike Okiro, is credited for pushing for the implementation of the new salary structure to enhance the officers’ purchasing power and disabuse their minds from corrupt practices.

Though the last administration made a recommendation on the pay rise but did not make funds available for the implementation of the new salary structure. The remuneration is accommodated in the 2008 budget, hence its implementation by the Yar’Adua’s administration.

From all indications, the Economic Confidential further confirmed that the new monthly packages are more than 100% over the old pays. For instance: a police constable’s former monthly salary of N7,300 is now N26,000; a sergeant’s former N9,000 is now N29,422; an Inspector’s former N15,000 is now N44,755; an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP)’s N25,000 is now N83,801 per; a Superintendent’s former N34,000 is now N99,238 the former N70,000 for a Deputy Commissioner of Police is now N149,579.
