How to Build Sites/Blogs That Convert

Choosing Your Domain Name

If you have never created a website before, you may be thinking that this is going to be difficult. Trust me, it’s not! Follow the steps and with practice you can have a new site up within just a few hours.
Your main focus when choosing a domain name are the search engines. You should keep your human visitors in mind, but your goal is to make the SE’s happy.
The great thing about it is that you won’t be agonizing for hours over trying to pick the best domain… You are simply going to use your keyword phrase as your domain! Obviously you’ll want to use .com whenever possible and .net or .org when it’s not. (You’ll want to stay away from the .info extensions, since they are commonly seen as hacker’s or spyware sites).
If your keyword phrase is already taken, then you can simply add words like review, info or hundreds of other words to the beginning or end of your keyword phrase and voila… you have a domain name.
I use NameCheap for just about all my domains and haven’t had a problem with them yet!

Hosting Your Blog

The next thing you need is a hosting account for your money site. There are numerous hosting accounts available to you.
I personally use Hostgator… it’s only 7 bucks a month and they allow you to host unlimited domains with one account.
www.HostGator.com
So by now you have decided on a product to promote and a key phrase to target. You should have a domain name with hosting set up and be ready to roll.
So what does your site look like?

Using Wordpress to Become a Super Affiliate

Okay so to create our site we are going to use a free tool known as Wordpress.
I don’t want you to go trying to reinvent the wheel! Wordpress is as absolutely amazing tool that anyone can use regardless of website building experience. The best part about it is… It’s FREE!
Another compelling reason (and probably the most important one) that we are using Wordpress is because Google and all the other search engines love it. It is fast, easy and professional.
How to Use Wordpress
Since Wordpress was originally created for blogging, it works a bit differently than most other website creation tools.
Instead of installing the program directly onto your pc, it actually gets installed right onto your web server. This allows you to access it from any computer in the world as long as you have internet access, along with your username and password.
The downside is you must have internet access.

How to Install Wordpress

I am going to show you step by step how to install Wordpress. It is very simple… Keep in mind that if you have any issues, Wordpress has a 24/7 support.
STEP 1: Log into your hosting account and scroll down your main cPanel window and click on the Fantastico De Luxe icon.

STEP 2: Now click on Wordpress on the left hand side.

STEP 3: Choose New Installation.

STEP 4: Install on domain. Choose which domain you are installing on. (You will probably only has one to choose from if that is your only domain on this account.)
STEP 5: Install in directory. You are installing this as your Home Page so you will just leave this blank.
STEP 6: Choose Admin name/password. Can be anything you like.
STEP 7: Choose an Admin nickname. Choose wisely as your visitors will see this as the owner of your site. Follow along with your name or character’s name – you are building credibility and trust.
STEP 8: Enter your site name and description. Enter your domain name and a brief description of your site – including your key phrase. Note: This description is not the one that will come up in the search engines. This is for the top of your page.
STEP 9: Enter your email account configuration and then click Install Wordpress.

STEP 10: Click finish installation if no errors are reported.

There are two more things you need to add to your site before writing your content. The first is to download and configure the two essential plugins and then you get to choose a theme for your site.

Installing the Plugins

Let’s start with the plugins. There are many plugins available to add to your site, but aren’t needed. There are 2 that you must have:
1.) Google XML Sitemaps: (helps with SEO) Download it here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/...map-generator/
This plugin is pretty self explanatory.
Installation:
Simply download the Zip-Archive and extract all files into your wp-content/plugins/ directory. Then go into your Wordpress administration page, click on Plugins and activate it. After that you will have a new menu point called "Sitemap" under the "Options" menu.
You can alter the default change frequencies, filename and other options there. Click once on "Rebuild Sitemap" to create your sitemap the first time after you are done building your site and anytime you add new pages after that.
*The script needs write access to your Blog directory. Check out the WordPress Codex or visit http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/...generator/faq/ for additional support.
Next is a little more complicated, but still relatively simple and just as important.

2.) All in one SEO pack: also helps to optimize your site for the SE’s. Download it here:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-in-one-seo-pack/

Installation
You can either use the automatic plugin installer or your usual FTP program to upload it to your wp-content/plugins directory. Then simply activate the plugin through the plugins menu in Wordpress.
Configure
Log into your Wordpress account and click on the settings tab on the right side. Select All in One SEO Pack and follow these instructions.

· Home Title: Your main key phrase/domain goes here.
· Home Description: A brief 20-30 word description that includes your key phrase and is intriguing to your visitors.
· Home Keywords: Your main key phrase and 2 LSI keywords. Don’t use more than that or Google will think you are keyword spamming.
· Make sure that you have “use no index” for both categories and archives checked to prevent duplicate content.
· Deselect auto generate descriptions because you will write each description separately.

Leave the rest of the boxes blank and click update options.
NOTE: Here is a great article for configuring and understanding the All In One SEO Pack plugin:

You have successfully configured your plugins.

Changing the Permalinks

One more thing we need to fix before we can start writing. The default link structure of your posts is ugly and very Google unfriendly.
It looks something like this:
www.yourdomain.com/p1824
Not only is that bad for SEO, we also want to make sure your key phrase is in the filename.
Here is how to fix it…
1.) Log into your Wordpress account.
2.) On the left side, click on the settings tab.
3.) Now click on permalinks
4.) Select custom structure and enter this exactly…
/%postname%
Click on save changes and you’re done. Your postname will now be in the URL for your post.

Accompanying Pages

For SEO purposes you want to make sure that your blog includes the following pages. This shows Google that your website is professional and not a “Fly by Night” operation.
There are 3 certain pages that Google likes to see in a blog or website, and having them will greatly improve your ranking.
Each site must have a:
· Privacy Policy page
· About Us page
· Contact Us page
Your blog will have a total of 4 pages. You will have a About Us page, Privacy Policy, Contact Us and the Resources page. The Privacy page and Contact page will only take a few minutes to complete. In total it shouldn’t take any more than a couple of hours to create your site.
Let’s talk about what each of these mean to your site.
About Us
Your about us page is a brief story about you (or your persona)… where you’ve come from, how you’ve come to where you are now and most importantly, where you are going. What are you looking to achieve with your website? Are you passionate about helping people find a solution to a certain problem?
It is your character. Visitors will want to get to know your “story” and why you created your site.
Privacy Policy
The easiest way to create privacy policies are to Google the term itself and utilize the resources available within those results. It is simple to modify any privacy policy to fit your website. Keep it simple and limit it to 100-200 words. It really doesn’t need to be complicated.
Contact Us
The contact us page is a very simple page explaining to your visitors how to contact you or your team. With this page, you want to encourage feedback and provide your email address.
Keep in mind that your visitors appreciate quick response times… it gives them a sense of security, reassures them that they are dealing with a real person and not just a computer screen and will make them feel more confident to do business with you.
My personal rule is to respond within 24-48 business hours. I will usually state that on the contact page as reassurance that my visitor’s emails aren’t being ignored.
Resources
On this page you are going to write a few hundred words of solid, quality information that is directly related to your niche. You may want to include a couple of links to related, supporting articles, videos, etc. (We will show you how to create your own YouTube videos in a later chapter.)
A few outbound links are encouraged to prove that you’re providing genuine content for your visitors and can improve your ranking. Don’t overdo it.
Before we get into creating the content and setting up your site, you need to understand how to optimize your site for the search engines.

Structuring Your Site for SEO

There are many different ways to optimize your site for the search engines. Throughout this book, we’ve given you tips and tricks to rank faster and higher than the competition.
Humans vs. the SE’s

Okay, so obviously we want to please our human visitors by giving them high quality content that will persuade them to buy our stuff. We also need to set up our page to please the search engines. Without them, we won’t have human visitors in the first place.
In order to do that, there must be no mistaking what our site is about. That is why we set it up to focus around one targeted key phrase.
With that in mind, we need to make sure that our page is crammed full of our key phrase, as well as lots and lots of related keywords, or LSI keywords.
I may have exaggerated a bit when I said that your site has to be ‘crammed’ full of your key phrase. You see there is a fine line between keyword stuffing and pleasing the SE’s – and keeping your site readable for your human visitors.

Basic Guidelines

Here are some basic guidelines to follow when creating your content.
1.) A good general rule of thumb is to use just a bit more of your key phrase than good grammar would dictate.

2.) 2 out of 3 of your main posts will have your entire key phrase as the first part of your title, which can be difficult if you are targeting a long tail keyword.
One of the easiest ways to do this without sounding ‘spammy’, is to include a ‘how to’ or a ‘my story’ to your title.

EXAMPLE:Let’s say for example that you are targeting the key phrase “ways to improve your golf swing”.

You could title it:

“7 Ways to Improve Your Golf Swing – How I Did It” (People love numbers by the way!)

Or better yet…

“3 Ways To Improve Your Golf Swing – Starting Today!”

The key is to stick to the ‘theme’ of your site. That helps to appeal to the SE’s AND your human visitors.

BTW: It’s not just the titles that need the keywords… you have to balance it throughout your site and the content. You need the keywords, but DON’T spam it!

Re: How to Build Sites/Blogs That Convert

Some hosting providers right now like Hostgator has an easy set up. I think they call it a Site Builder so that you don't have to be a programmer to create a website.
