    Latest scholarship offers

    (Enables international students to undertake a postgraduate research qualification in Australia and gain experience with leading Australian researchers.
    Scholarships are open to international students of all countries (except Australia and New Zealand) and are available for a period of two years for a Research Masters degree or three years for a Research Doctorate degree. The scholarship covers tuition fees and health cover costs for scholarship holders, and health cover costs for their dependants. From 2011, commencing IPRS recipients will be able to apply for an Australian Postgraduate Award.
    The objectives of the IPRS scheme are to:

    • attract top quality international postgraduate students to areas of research strength in Australian higher education providers (HEP) ; and
    • support Australia’s research effort.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible for an IPRS, a student must:

    • be an overseas student;
    • meet international student visa requirements as specified by the DIAC, including the requirement to purchase and maintain a standard Overseas Student Health Cover policy approved by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing;
    • be commencing full-time enrolment for the first time in a HDR at a HEP in Australia that is an eligible scholarship provider in Australia;
    • be undertaking study in a subject area identified by the HEP as one of its areas of research concentration;
    • not hold a research qualification regarded by the HEP to be equivalent to an Australian Research Doctorate or, if undertaking a Research Masters, not hold a research qualification regarded by the HEP to be equivalent to or higher than an Australian Research Masters;
    • not have held an AusAID scholarship within the two years prior to commencing the IPRS;
    • not be receiving a scholarship for which course tuition is a component under any other scholarship scheme to which the Australian Government makes a substantial contribution.

    Scholarship

    330 scholarships are offered at Australian The scholarships cover the tuition fees and health costs. stipend rates for 2011 are $22,860 for full-time students and $12,388 for part-time students.
    The deadline varies among universities but is around July-October each year
    IRELAND
    Deadline: 15 July 2011
    Open to: Degree holders in Computer Science, Mathematics or Software Engineering
    Scholarship: payment of fees, a stipend of €18,000 per annum, and ancillary costs
    Applications are invited for two PhD studentships with the Principles of Programming research group in the Department of Computer Science
    Both PhD studentships are funded through the Research Frontiers Programme of Science Foundation
    The studentships are offered in the following areas:
    A: Formal models and transformation for software metricsSoftware metrics can be applied at many levels, from analysis, through design and into code. In a round-trip engineering environment it is reasonable to expect that metric calculations will move with ease from models through code and back again. This PhD will develop a formal foundation that will provide for the definition and use of metrics at the intra- and inter-model level, and investigate the portability of these metrics between models.
    B: Formal models and transformation for class invariants
    Class invariants are a major component of OO specification and development, yet there are many barriers to describing and using them correctly across different models in a model-oriented environment. This project will investigate the specification of invariants at the intra- and inter-model level, and investigate the portability of these invariants between models. Fundamental to each project is the development of a formal infrastructure to facilitate the movement of metrics and invariants across models based on the category-theoretic framework of institution.
    Eligibility

    Ideally, an applicant will have either:

    • A degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering, with demonstrated knowledge of formal foundations through subjects such as formal specification, program verification, formal semantics, logic and/or theorem-proving.
    • A degree in Mathematics, including abstract algebra and/or category theory, with a good knowledge of programming and algorithms (e.g. through a CS minor), and a clear interest in working in Computer Science.
    • The project investigates the formal foundations of model-oriented engineering; thus, some experience in formal methods or category theory is highly desirable.

    Scholarship

    The PhD studentships are funded through the Research Frontiers Programme of Science Foundation Ireland. For each PhD student the funding includes payment of fees, a stipend of €18,000 per annum, and ancillary costs. Both PhD studentships will run from October 2011 for four years.
    Application

    To apply: Send a copy of your C.V including details of your educational background, projects and publications (if any). You should highlight your experience/courses in formal logic, formal verification and/or algebra.
    The deadline for submitting your application is 15 July 2011

    Conflict Studies and Management Programme (CSMP) at the Willy Brandt School of Public Policy in Erfurt – Scholarships for PhD Students

    In line with the special focus of a public policy school, the research programme at the Brandt School looks at conflict management with a special interest in how policy-making and public policy as a research perspective (discipline) needs to be re-thought in the context of conflict resolution and post-conflict reconstruction efforts. Originally, the key concepts in the field of public policy were based on implicit assumptions about strong institutions and stable political conditions. However, nowadays it is becoming apparent that these approaches need to be revised to understand the special conditions and challenges in regions of conflict. In particular, the role of governments, international actors and NGOs as policy-makers in conflict areas, fragile states and war-torn countries are considered in the CSMP.
    The PhD programme is a three-year-track combining independent research and course work on an advanced level.
    In the first year of their doctoral studies students deepen their methodological and theoretical competence and work on their language skills. They are required to complete two courses per term, which are arranged with their academic advisors in advance. In addition, students will work on their research project in independent study units. In the second year, doctoral students focus on their own research project. Candidates may conduct field research and they may do research abroad either at one of our partner institutions or at an appropriate institution of their own choice or gain teaching/lecturing experience. In their third year, doctoral students will work towards completing their doctoral thesis. The degree is conferred after the public oral defence is completed and final revisions are submitted.
    Eligibility

    Candidates holding an appropriate Master’s degree with a strong research proposal preferably in the fields of post-conflict-management and reconstruction, peace building, institutional development and governance, regional security (esp. developing frameworks for regional security architectures), conflict resolution or terrorism are invited to apply. The strength of the research proposal is one of the major selection criteria.
    Applications are open to candidates from countries in the Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia, South East Asia, Africa and Latin America
    PhD Scholarships

    The PhD Scholarships are awarded for the normal duration of the PhD course (3 years) with an additional German language course of generally 6 months before the beginning of studies. All scholarships will initially be awarded for a maximum of 12 months and can be extended upon application.
    DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 1000 €. The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance in Germany. In addition, DAAD grants an appropriate travel allowance as well as a study and research subsidy and in applicable cases rent subsidies and / or family allowances. The scholarship holders will be exempted from tuition fees. They will be offered special tutoring at the Brandt School, and there is the possibility of further activities.
    Application Process

    Application papers to be submitted include
    Motivation Letter containing a precise description of the applicant’s academic / professional and personal reasons for wishing to participate in the programme;

    • A detailed and precise research proposal;
    • Full Curriculum Vitae including information about precise field of study and, if applicable, description of job or research experience;
    • Recent language certificates giving evidence of the level of proficiency in English (TOEFL, IELTS) and if applicable in German. Please make sure to register in time for the respective tests. Fees for obtaining such certificates are considered as a personal career investment and will not be reimbursed.

    • Authenticated copies of all certificates.

    The 3 complete sets of application papers must be submitted by 31 July 2011

    Scholarship Description: The Persian Empire (c. 550-330 BCE) was the first real world empire and comprised a staggering multitude of nations and cultures. Scholars working on this unprecedented historical phenomenon have given most weight to the Greco-Roman sources, which, naturally, tend to focus mostly on Greek affairs and on the Greco-Persian wars (490-479). Since the early 1980s a new perspective has been growing, seeking to deconstruct the necessarily limited scope of the classical sources, describing long-term processes and underlying structures, and giving due attention to primary sources from within the empire, despite the inherent limitations that these sources also have.
