How easy is it to combine lectures every other day, personal and group assignments, tests, term papers, presentations, examinations and project work with any other thing like a job and worse still, running your own business?
Well, in a world where most people like to play safe and not bite more than they can chew, some excel at doing the exact opposite, biting more than they can chew! One of such people is Ogunshola Oluwafemi, a second year student of the Department of Philosophy, University of Lagos, who not only operates as a full-time student but also runs an events decorations and drinks management business of his own. Tough or cool? Well, you decide after you read what he has to say about combining his studies with running his own business.

We are not talking about a super rich businessman. Buying grades here, as he works as hard as any other student at his studies as he does at his business. In fact, most decorations within the Unilag Campus in recent times have gone through his Registered Company-Midas Touch Drinks and Events. What beats the imagination is that most students whose only pre-occupation is to bury their head in books are not even able to outshine him academically. How he has been able to set up himself in this demanding business world and still be able to attend to the demand of schooling was of interest to us and here he shares with us his experience.

WHAT DRINKS MANGER IS IN THE WORLD OF EVENT MANAGEMENT?
There are different specializations in the world of event management. For me, I specialize in the decoration and drinks aspects of an event. Drinks management does not entail cocktails. As a drinks manager, we organize getting the assorted drinks requested by our clients, cooling chess, ice and waiters to serve at the event. The business of drinks management ensures that all guests are served equally at an event and the drinks handled as requested by our client. My waiters are trained and positioned at events to ensure the success of this feat.
The decoration of an event entails getting the needed materials to beautify a venue depending on the taste of our client. We could also design and advice our client about what is suitable for the event.

HOW I MANAGE MY EVENTS SPECIALIZATION.
Events usually come up during weekends. This makes it easier for me to oversee my business and also give the required attention to my studies. And of course my strong principle of time management makes it a whole lot easier for me.
It takes some time to fix up any of these things. It is not a one man’s job even if you are the conceptualizer. I have boys working with me at both managing drinks and doing decoration. My boys having understood my love for perfectly done jobs ensures we meet up with our set standards at every outing.
In situations where I have more than one decoration for a day, I schedule my time to meet up with doing the jobs perfectly. I work overnight at one venue then move to the other venue in the early hours of the morning. At times when I have the contract to handle the drinks and decoration of a client at an event, I give my boys the details of the event and monitor their activities as they go about setting the drinks for the event while I give finishing touch to the decoration.

HOW I STARTED DECORATION AND DRINKS MANAGEMENT.
I have been doing these things before I got admission to Unilag. My Aunty woke me up from my slumber when she called me on the 6th of December, 2006 to join her in the business. I quit the job I was doing before then in other to focus getting an admission but my Aunty felt I could go after getting my admission during the week while I make some money for myself during the weekends. Working with my Aunty gave me the opportunity to discover my talent and my love for the job. Though, it was very stressful then but it is worth the while especially now that I am the Managing Director of my own company. Right now, I have five years experience on the job-three years with my Aunty and two years as the boss of my reputable company. After my graduation, I would still continue in the business because I have all it takes to be an accomplished decorator and drinks manger.

MY UTMOST MOTIVATION TO RUN MY SCHOOL AND BUSINESS CONCURRENTLY.
This motivation comes from my inherent abilities, the lectures I have attended and the people that have inspired and encouraged me having seen my abilities displayed in jobs that I have done, admonished that I can combine it with schooling. Really, my school activities are usually during the week (Monday-Friday) while I handle events during the weekend. The two do not clash. I am able to cope with it all because of this arrangement. Occasionally, when we have lecture on Saturdays or have a test on Monday, I would have rounded up my decoration in the early hours of the morning or before the guests starts arriving. By this, I have the time to go for lecture which is usually around 2pm or go somewhere to study while my boys stay behind to take care of things until my return. In the area of drinks management, my boys can also handle the situation perfectly in my absence.
More so, the Nigeria of today does not encourage people who relax until after their degree programmes before they start going about with their certificates looking for what to do or seeking for others to employ them. I believe that this business is an avenue for me to establish myself into one of the big names we have in the industry.
Furthermore, people either rich or poor would at one time or the other require the services of a decorator or a drinks manager. This is one of the opportunities in the business I do not want to forgo.

THE SECRET BEHIND MY ACCOMPLISHMENT.
The secret of my accomplishment comes from my staunch stand for time management and consistency. There is a school time table. I draw my own time table which I use to regulate my activities. By this, I do not allow my school to suffer because of my job, vice versa. Neither do I inconvenience myself. In terms of consistency, if you are consistent, people will know you with what you do. With that people can tell what you do without you telling them.
Also, I have the principle to deliver according to the contract reached with a client. Another thing is that your relationship with your staff will determine how successful your business will be. You need to know very well the people you work with in order to maximize their potentials to attain the height you desire for your business. I give my boys free hand to do their jobs. Aside that I pay them after every outing, I also take care of their feeding and transportation. All these, I do to get the best result from them at every outing.

HOW I GET FINANCE TO RUN MY BUSINESS.
In this business, it is imperative that you collect your money before carrying out the contract. If you don’t it might be difficult collecting your money at the end of the day. You might not be able to reach a particular client after an event because the mobile line he got was in view of the event. After the event, he does away with the line.
So, with my clients, after an agreement has been reached, I expect them to pay for the services. This is the money I use to execute the contract. Everything that would see to the success of my service is catered for in the contract.

THE CHALLENGES OF COMBINING BUSINESS AND STUDIES.
It is not easy working and schooling at the same time. It always comes with its stress. As a student, there are times when I work all through my weekends and I have a test to write maybe by Monday. Apart from that, I would be tired and stressed from the tedious activities of the weekend. There are also times I might not have cash on me and would be distracted and unfocused during lectures. The reason for this is that, I may be hoping that one of my clients would call to give me a job. I experienced this more when I just started off as the boss of my company. I am always looking forward to getting a contract basically because I am the one sponsoring myself in school.

In terms of putting up a decoration, my challenge could be the hall manager who by his rules on hall maintenance might disrupt my initial design for an event. Likewise, some guests I do not have contract with might show up at an event only to condemn the design I took my time to put up. They would expect me to make a change on the design as regards their specification. The weather could also be a threat especially in the case of an open field decoration.
In terms of the drinks, we have had misunderstandings with people over drinks. And we have had people approaching the cooling chess with claims that they have not been served drinks during an event.

THE CORE THINGS I DO TO SATISFY MY CUSTOMER AND STAFF.
Going by the taste of my client, I set a quotation; we sign an agreement and carry out our management. Money, to a large extent is the main reason why most people are working. I ensure that I don’t owe my staff and also attend to their welfare at the event. Most people don’t take care of their staff which makes their jobs suffer.

MY ADVICE TO STUDENTS WHO WANT TO DO BUSINESS.
PATIENCE AND ENDURANCE.
A student must know that business has it pressures. The student must be patient because business doesn’t start booming immediately you get into it. Based on this understanding, he can now reach a decision on what he wants to do in the business word and take action. And when you succeed in doing a job, please broadcast it.

TIME MANAGEMENT AND CONSISTENCY.
He should imbibe the concept of time management and consistency if he wants to go far in the business.
In all, the only problem with most people in this country is that they are lazy and want ready-made ideas or finished jobs. They do not want to go through stress but would want to collect money at the end of the day. But if you are ready to go through the stress and not give up, you can be what you want to be. This belief is the reason why I am breaking even in the business world and also in my academics.
