    Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro

Out of this amount, according to documents obtained by our correspondent, N13.9m was “allocated to the section (dogs section) throughout the federation for the maintenance of existing police service dogs, the replacement of dogs and the purchase of dog equipment from January to December, 2007.”

Saturday Punch discovered that the police claimed the money was also spent on dog equipment such as leaches, chains, kennel collars, combs, brushes, tracking lines, hand protectors, training suits and training harness. The documents also showed that the police spent N16.640m on the “maintenance and feeding of horses.”

It was not clear how many dogs the money was actually spent on as part of the documents put the number at 122 while another portion put it at 71. In a summary, which is also contained in the documents, the police put the number of its dogs at 71, out of which 17 were said to be ‘unserviceable.’

The documents said, “The sum of N85m was allocated for the purchase of dogs, replacement of retired/dead dogs and for the purpose of dog equipment such as leaches, chains, kernel collars, combs, brushes, tracking lines, hand protectors, training suits, tracking harness, etc in the year under review. Due to the inadequate funding of the section during the past year, the section could only account for 122 dogs in the year under review.”

The distribution of the dogs to the 36 states was outlined as Enugu State (four), Imo (three), Kaduna (1, Katsina (19), Kwara (five), Lagos (four), Ondo (seven), Plateau (seven) and Sokoto (six). As regards horses, it was stated that there were 24 in Adamawa, 22 in Bauchi, 90 in Borno, 10 in Gombe, 38 in Kaduna, 19 in Kano and 16 in Katsina. Other states with horses are Kebbi (11), Kwara (four), Lagos (five), Nasarawa (11), Plateau (11), Sokoto (12) and Taraba
