OVER 3,000 women from Ikebiri community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State are threatening to go naked if the issue of the oil spills ravaging their community is not addressed by the oil companies alleged to be responsible for the problem.

The oil spills, the Nigerian Tribune gathered, apart from destroying farm produce, recently claimed the life of an aged woman identified as Madam Bouse-Ere James, last year.

The spokesperson for the community, Mrs. Ebitare Agbakabuwuo, in a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday called on the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) to compensate the affected communities.

The statement read in part: “We will go naked in the streets of the state capital because we have been raped by oil spillage for the past three weeks.

“There was no oil spill site inspection’s report and the cause of the spill corrosion and equipment failure. The leakage point has not been clamped and Agip should immediately clean up the impacted areas“.
