SOLAR ENERGY ENGINEER

REQUIREMENTS:
HND, B.SC, HND in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering
Duties and Responsibilities
Design, configuration and installation
• Develop design specifications and functional requirements for residential, commercial or industrial solar energy systems or components
• Recommend energy-efficient design solution and energy-efficient technology upgrades including accurate descriptions, saving potential, cost estimates and back up data to verify ECMs
• Design or coordinate design of photovoltaic (PV) or solar thermal systems, including system components, for residential and commercial buildings.
• Create electrical single-line diagram, panel schedules or connection diagrams for solar electric systems using computer-aided design (CAD) software
• Manages the installation of passive systems, which depend on best use of windows and insulation to absorb and reflect solar radiation for heating and cooling purposes
• Maintain knowledge of renewable technologies commercially available (PV panels, thin-film, inverter, wind turbine, biomass, etc) and provide recommendations on merits of different manufacturers’ products; provide insight into new products coming to market
• Responsible for the construction and installation of active systems, which require solar collectors, concentrators, pumps and fans
Project Management
• Create plans for solar energy system development, monitoring and evaluating activities
• Create checklists for review or inspection of completed solar installation projects.
• Conduct engineering site audits to collect structural, electrical and related site information for use in the design of residential or commercial solar power systems
• Coordinate the overall integration of design engineering, construction, start-up/turnover and subsequent operations and maintenance of energy project
Monitoring, Evaluation and Data Analysis
• Collect data on facilities, operations, utilities and other data needed to develop energy projects and/or make efficiency improvements or to prepare energy analysis of facilities or systems
• Development of measurement based monitoring and verification plans and protocols, commissioning protocol and associated post implementation operation and maintenance protocols
• Analyze blue prints and perform site surveys to identify mechanical, electrical and control systems and determine facility operational characteristics
• Conduct detailed mechanical and control system energy improvement analysis and calculations using customized tools, spreadsheets and/or commercially available products
Business Development
• Screening and qualifying the feasible of energy efficiency and renewable energy opportunities
• Perform and supervise preliminary and detailed facility audits to identify Energy Conservation Measure (ECMs) and/or opportunities.
• Project and business development responsibilities from the preliminary audit, detailed energy audit up to the design/build phase
• Prepare reports to management
Industry Knowledge
• Establish working knowledge of various equipment suppliers’ technologies
• Drive the technical due diligence from initial screen until turnover to the project management group for implementation phase. This will involve identifying known risks (i.e. technical, technical, construction, price, schedule, environmental, warranties, performance guarantees etc); indicate impact and how they will be addressed and mitigated
Skill and Specifications
• Good communication skills both written and verbal is important
• Ability to participate in and contribute towards technical discussion or issues
• Must be innovative, result-oriented, self-motivated and able to work independently or in team
• Should be able to meet targets and deadlines
• Experience in prior project work in an industry environment is required
• Ability to provide technical leadership and project management to guide a team of energy engineering staff to identify, develop and implement integrated energy efficiency programs.
• Ability to individually develop customized energy improvement calculating tools is a plus
• Measurement and verification skills, including installation of instrumentation for short-term data logging of power and environmental parameters
• Ability to plan and manage the development of selected project opportunities and to direct
