Chemonics International, an international development consulting firm, seeks an assistant national technical manager for a five-year USAID-funded Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) project (2012-2016). The project is the world’s premier provider of high quality food security analysis and early warning and aims to collaborate with international, regional, and national partners to provide timely and rigorous early warning and analysis of potential, emerging, and/or evolving food security issues in order to inform appropriate humanitarian response. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world. This position is based in Abuja, Nigeria, and Nigerian citizens are strongly preferred.

The assistant national technical manager (ANTM) is a senior technical professional who works closely with the national technical manager (NTM) to support all FEWS NET activities in Nigeria and serves in a role similar to that of a deputy country representative. Where appropriate, the ANTM will also support remote-monitoring in selected countries.

Responsibilities include:

  • Implement efficient, focused food security monitoring, early warning analysis, and response planning
  • Carry out effective communication of analyses to partners and decision-makers through high-quality reports and briefings
  • Carry out capacity strengthening and network management
  • Conduct strategic planning and execute technical activities including early warning, livelihoods and vulnerability assessments, monitoring tools and methods development, capacity development, markets and trade analysis, and response planning
  • Collect, archive, analyze, and share food security data and information


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required in a discipline that is directly relevant to food security analysis, including economics, agricultural economics, agronomy, nutrition, climatology, anthropology, or social geography
  • Minimum five years of relevant country or regional experience in early warning/food security information systems, food security analysis, and other related fields
  • GIS applications and mapping skills preferred
  • Excellent computer skills, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience effectively working and coordinating with partners and stakeholders
  • Willingness to travel extensively throughout Nigeria
  • Experience conducting field assessments and knowledge of standard data collection methodology
  • Donor coordination experience
  • Excellent analytical and report-writing skills
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
