As a young undergraduate in the early 90’s I studied to my perceived ability, mixing serious lectures with fun (No regrets). I graduated without an extra year but ended-up DASHING almost 3 years to ASUU strikes and delay in NYSC posting turning my 5 year program to 8 year!!!
That was 12 years ago...but looking back I thank God for the zeal I had as a COPPER! I struggled to get a SIDE job while serving in a Gov school (one of the best move I have made).
Getting that part time job wasn’t easy, I was a fresh graduate but had the then most sort-after professional certification. But even with that i had to put pressure (submitted my resume over 5x and placed calls to a particular firm) to be shortlisted for test. I passed the company graduate test with flying colors and the company only accepted to place me on Allowance since I lacked NYSC certificate (I only had 3 months to completion of NYCS).
This same company (where i broke their test score record) refused to change my allowance to salary months after I had finished NYSC( Why are some Nigeria employers wicked!!). Yet I represented them as senior engineer in the fields and have plenty technicians reporting to me!
They only accepted to regularize my salary years later when I walked out on them...of course I never looked back!
During my stay with my initial firm I had written and passed many aptitude test; Mobil, shell, total, Addax, UN, NEXEN, MTN, Econet, NNPC, FIRS and many other i can’t remember.( Men, even God no say i spend plenty money on hotel bills and transportation o- graduating from night-bus to flight as the years went by)
Even with passing test and getting to the final stage (99% of all the listed) and even told of been successfully via phone or email it’s not funny not to hear from these company(s)! ( i wonder why recruiter in Nigeria are soooo wicked seem they enjoy keeping people in the dark)
Only to later discover names had been swapped and other people getting the offer!!!! In some cases the people been given offer didn’t even attend any of the recruitment processes. (Maybe HR personnel know that they may swap names hence their reason for keeping potential employee in the dark during recruitment)
Looking at the rate at which our nation produces graduate, i hope people start learning how to be produce something tangible with their hands while in school (I suggest farming, carpentry, welding, tailoring, etc). In the present and future Nigeria those that are able to produce something on their own would be KING!!!
From a friend I know.
I graduted with 3rd class
Aplied for jobs for about 18months without been called for any test! I changed my cv and excluded 3rd class and was invited for some test. In d test center I was turned back by mobile and shell! It was not funny well Its not anybody's fault but mine!
I choose to avoid multinational and Ơ̴̴͡.̮Ơ̴̴͡ for local company, even that was not easy.
Oh God forgive me all my sins and ignorance! I went to learn computer, learnt autocad but me getting a job was still difficult!
As a nigerdelta person, I try community well that one no work!
As God would have it a foreign company advertised for graduate trainee n I just applied with my old cv(3rd class boldly written) I applied and forgot about it! This was 2002! I had forgetten about them when I got a text for test n interview!
The test n interview where conducted in 2003 by some oyinbo, I passed in flying colours. Not once did the oyinbo me considered my low degree! We went for 6month training abroad, Am still working with them and now hardly spend a complete month in 9ja based on my position! I still wonder where I would be if the company recruitment was handled by nigerians then!
Hmmm
well, from the two true-stories above, one thing is clear:
PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF, BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF YOUR DREAMS & DESIRES; NEVER GIVE UP BECAUSE UR NEXT JOB APPLICATION/INTERVIEW COULD BE YOUR BREAKTHROUGH.
I'm happy 4 d two of you. Though my congrats is heavily 'in arrears,' please accept it all d same.
Cheers!

I guess it's cos with time we see d same thing diffrently!
Is it legally possible to sue a prospective employer for not getting back to you after informing you that you have successfully passed their test, interview, final stage or whatever? I'd like to know this.
Lmfao, make im try abi, thats hilarious.
@ sauer i doubt that's possible, don't rily see any grounds. even if dat by any chance happens in other countries, it definitely ain't happening here with the kind of justice system we've got, and even if it were, suing a prospective employer won't exactly speak well of you.
excellent post, very interesting topic too. just like donivald said persistence, resilience, determination and faith in oneself are key.Tho we are oftentimes left discouraged by the turn of events, we cannot but press harder. I'm presently on my own pilgrimage and hope to reach home rily soon*wide gin*.
please people share your job search experience, it could be encouraging enlightening or instructive ...how long did u search? where did you get your break through? from advertised vacancies applied for online or from visiting companies and dropping of CVs etc just share
here's one...a friend of mine once visited a company somewhere in lekki to see some someone. He got talking with the receptionist and asked if he could apply as a corp member. she told him there was no harm in trying, he dropped his CV, he was called a few weeks later and just like that he cupped a 70k job. he was posted to the North but he spent his service year in lagos with the comp. He is currently done wiv service and is still with them tho he's still functioning in the same "assistant" capacity. and yeah, it's an oil servicing firm owned by a Nigerian but with alot of italians
Sauer, it makes no sense in suing a company for not getting back to you on a particular recruitment exercise. The company reserves the exclusive right to communicating the recruitment status to applicant. Thats their prerogative. Its just like you asking me a question or talking to me and I refuse to reply you, are you going to sue me for not replying you?
Very Good question, some peeps with short-eye sight may laugh at the question but if you have experienced it, you will know it’s not funny.
Let me shade more light on my experience with UN.. I applied for a UN position and after some months I was shortlisted for an interview but was shocked to face a test on arrival at UN building Abuja. 2 weeks after the test i was amongst the successful applicants called for an interview. (The interview had six members with only 2 Nigerian)
The interview was really sweet and when I walked out I saw myself a UN staff already. As I headed to the airport back to my base i told my wife that she should start preparing her mind that we would relocate to ABUJA soon. A week letter I got a phone call from the man ( oyinbo) that headed the interview panel telling me he needs to confirm if I am ready to locate to ABUJA and that the position need to be filled urgently. Also that i was the best during the interview and my name had been sent to HR. He be working with me so i should confirm i would relocate. I told him i was already checking-out houses in ABUJA in preparation. He informed me the call was off-record and that HR would get in touch with me to finalize paper work.
True to his word I got a mail from a Nigerian HR rep to send my documents, I was shocked because I had submitted both hard and softcopy to the same person on more than two occasion! All the same i sent it and called the interview panel head (to info him I got that the call from HR like he said), he was happy and told me he looked forward to working with me!
1, 2,3 moths passed no news or info from UN, i called the interview head, the oyinbo just picked and told me he had done his part o.
The HR refused to respond to my calls or email. By the six month oyinbo was not picking my calls.
Later i got to know someone was handpicked and given the job.. LOL (now am laughing cos maybe i for done died as BOKO ARE RAM don BLAST that place and the floor i was suppose to work was involved)
But TELL me if i had my way wouldn’t i have sued their !!!
I just pray peeps in Nigeria HR change... EVEN if they want to play pranks no wahala, JUST KEEP APPLICANTS UPDATED.
Both employed and unemployed job seekers spend huge resources (Time and money) on recruitment process and they are not reimbursed in anyway. The most painful aspect is that they are kept in the dark!!
NB Personal I don’t see them changing soon because even they themselves know that in most cases it’s not the best fit candidate that is employed (they don’t employ people based on merit or experience).
Mine was similar too...first was an online test, passef, 2nd online test, passed, called for a written test passed d test ( over 1000 people), went for assessment, passed d assessment, invited for first interview, went for second interview where we were down to 5 out of of 2 yorubas and 3 ibos. was told to send my credentials etc which off course is final verification ...was so sure d job was mine. days passed, weeks passed, called d HR who said they will still get back to me, weeks turned to months. even spoke with d manager I was meant to work with who said its a HR thing. Only for some time later to hear that 2 people were taken - d two yorubas. HR was Yoruba , manager was Yoruba- wot did I even expect....and that was it. and to think that its a multinational company makes it even more disheartening.
I guess its for a reason.
omg dats terrible, can u imagine! wts the hope of jobseekers in light of all this nonsense. its pathetic the way alota things are done in naija, na truely God go save us.
D level of tribalism going on especially with coys in d southwest is very alarming. Yet we all say it is one Nigeria. They claim it was what Obafemi Awolowo taught them to do. To give a job or any position 2 a person 4rm another tribe if and only if no Yoruba was available 4 it. It is d worst policy i've ever heard of! Even worse than the Nazi ideology.
No matter the stress and attitude from HOUR in nigeria don't give up.
This is a true testimony from one of my Sibling!
After completing his NYSC we wanted him to do his masters abroad (so that he can have a soft career landing) but somehow he was not granted study visa! We all felt bad and so he entered the labour market, for 2 month I was sending his cv online to atleast 10 address! Sending his resume became part of my job description at work!!!!
After 2months not even a response or test interview (he graduated with 2:2). He decied to attend an engineering training in dubia for a month ( thankGod I was free from sending resume for 1 month). On his return we started broadcasting his cv again, and that same week we recived an interview offer and he resume a week latter! We didn't know anybody, he google up the email address of the company ramdomly!!! He is still working there and doing very well.
Keep pushing, working it, praying and you would get there!!!!!
Wow..i must say am humbled readin dis..though i gradu8td 07 i must say job search in Nigeria require extraordinary perseverance n faith..each tym i open my sent msg folder,i cant help but give God glory bcos out of ova 250 msgs 97.99% ar job applicatns n nt 1 of dem ws to d company where i work rite nw.i bcame d first person in my dept to be employd witout knwin any1, dy named me d lucky 1 n dis ws an applicatn i submitd by hand in february at dr security post, afta 6months wit strait interview i ws cald to resume in sept 11..i ws so relieved to leave d indians dat hs held my in slavery in d name of job.in all dis God ws preparing me..all i can say is keepin applyin, keep pushin n dont give up dat job dat is urs ll nt even give u much stress.i ve lost count of tests n interviews dat were fruitless but in all God is still God.
I want 2 say dat readin al dis posts ve been a source of encouragement 2 me. Though i am a fresh graduate (completed nysc february 2012), d search 4 job ve been easy. Lyk Joyce Meyer puts it "never give up", i am pressin on d upward way.
2 nne_mak & evry1 who contributed, God bless u all. I wud definitely share my own testimony here very soon
Sorry, i meant 2 say dat d search 4 job ve nt been easy
Actually, it's not like it happened to me or something. But am just curious if this was legally possible. Underline the word, "legally".
If one passes very well and this is subsequently acknowledged by the company, why then should an opportunity be denied one? I believe the recruitment process is a form of contract between the recruiter and the recruitee, and the recruiter holds it as a duty once he/she has promised the recruitee something. At least on a verbal level......
I had the same experience this year with a company in Lagos that has a large % of its workforce from the eastern part of Nigeria. Out of five of us (two yorubas and three igbos)that made it to the final stage, the three igbos (100%) were finally employed. So don't make it seem like its just a Yoruba thing. Its rather a blackman syndrome. Rise above this mental slavery of race and ethnic superiority
U may be right but even d Yorubas themselves say it dat it is wat they were taught by Awo. This tiwa n tiwa thing must stop!
Well am not tribalistic: i speak Igbo, yourba very well and a little french!!!
My extended family is mixed with many tribes so i dont see anything as been tribalistic!!!
But one thing i know is that in any 1 man coy in nigeria, 85% of the workfore tend to come from the same tribe as the compnay owner or his wify...lol
Another true story from my former Boss
He search for job for years everywhere(; Big firm, small firm, Hotel, security outfit, business center, cyber-cafe etc)
Finally he got a job in a business center-- A graduate of engineering from one of the top 10 Federal university in the country. At least he had a job to go out to every morning and come back home late at night.
This very low ALLOWEE ( can’t be called salary ) job kept him going while he continued the search.
With all the application and test he wrote, he got his major job from the least expected places!
A stranger gave him lift one day and they got talking and finally exchanged number, after few weeks he got a call from the stranger asking him to bring along his resume to an interview.
The stranger was amongst the panel and he got a mouth-watering job where we finally met!
Lesson here is “ your job can come from anywhere..be prepared and stay positive”
God bless the originator of this trend. Pls we need more testimonies to calm our nerves for those of us that are jst startng our career
Kudos 2 Nne- Mak for starting dis thread, I think this will really help to strenghten and calm d nerves of numerous job seekers..
There are great testimony in the NNPC HOPEFULL thread! Imagine how long the recruitment is taking!!! But today lots of people are celebrating!!!!!
Hmmm! My own story ehhh!
Not telling it now, till I finaly bag a job.
But I must comfess that the labor market is too tough.
Mine is coming soon....an amazing testimony.
My hope was high dat i wud gt a gud job after graduatin 5yrs ago with a 2.1(4.10/5.00) in Economics. D hope lukd like a mirage afta i was home for like 4yrs. I applied as if my life depended only on it. I prayed as if i wud neva pray again. Spent a lot on browsing, going to tests/interviews' venues.Hope dashed severaly. I was even swindled of 180k yle pursuing a job. I bcame dejected, depressed, n downcast. I cried my eyes out, askin God y me. I neva knew God was wit me in d storm embracing me. Last year december, i got called by my pastor 2 go n see anoda pastor who knows sum1 dat can help. D pastor i went 2 gave me a man's email dat i shud send my cv 2 d man which i did. Under 2 wks, i was asked 2 report for work in an organisatn wit a gross salary of ova 150k- no test, no interview. Rite now, i just won visa lottery nw planning 2 travel out. Whateva it is u are facin, just blv in God n neva stop pursuing and praying. It might take years- only blv.
=))º°˚˚˚°ºнaĦaнaº°˚˚˚°º=)). :)
Keep it coming! Never giveup
Hmmm, never easy sha...... I believe a good one is coming.
My experience was quite different. As a fresh graduate, armed with certifications and positivity, I proceeded for my NYSC in Lagos Camp in Oct 2010! Prayed fervently, and at the close of Camp, I was posted to NLNG! On getting there, the HR person in charge intimated me that there have no immediate need for Engineers, but if I know someone working in NLNG, i should tell the person to help fight my case. (imagine). Meanwhile, some other corpers who were also engineers, but had "long legs" were accepted! With optimism and a strong resolve to get a merit-based job, I quickly asked him to prepare his (not mine) rejection letter. Finally, I hit the streets of V.I, submitting my CV's to IT firms, telecoms, etc. I aced all the interviews I attended, and after resumption at a telecoms services firm, the calls from other firms filled my phone. 5 firms asked me to resume including MTN. While serving, I used my spare time to study and perfect my GMAT/aptitude test skills, and applied only @ Multinationals, because I believed that they were merit-based. To cut the long-story short, I passed my first ever Dragnet test for a multinational...passed through the rigorous competency-based assessment day, completed my medicals and I am currently a Management Trainee there. My advise to fellow NHJ's, there still exist merit-based jobs out there, and when you get the opportunity, make the most out of it.
Wow.. Please never give up!!! IF HUNKYGEE can do it then many more can do better.................... I good and skilled person can not be ignored for long!!!!
this is so touching. iv really learnt some
