ADVICE TO ALL FRESH ENGINEERS
I am new on this forum but I want to just give a word of advice. I work with Amazon Energy and I also teach at Gold Gate Engineering Institute.
Please it is good to learn industrial leading software like CEASAR II, PDMS, STAADPro, HYSYS etc but that is not just all. Learning software without the background knowledge may be a waste of time and money. There are many training outfits in Nigeria who are not entirely honest with young engineers. You may not go too far career wise, if you are learning PDMS without a piping training. Likewise if you are learning CAESER II without piping stress analysis training, you are being short changed. Needless to say, there is a big difference between software and the theoretical/ practical knowledge. It is the combination of the 3 that makes you a sound engineer. I often interview several engineers who have done this software training alone but have to turn them down because they lack the background knowledge required. Don’t work for the software; make the software work for you.
I would like other people who are employed in the oil & gas to comment on this topic. Let us enlighten these young ones.

Re: ADVICE TO ALL FRESH ENGINEERS
I agree with you to the extent that you are not asking these new graduates not to learn these software at all. I am a Nigerian Engineer. I was trained here, I also work here. There is no Mechanical Engineering graduate that has no knowledge of materials, stress analysis, pipes(usually in thick and thin cylinder analysis in mechanics of materials),flow analysis etc. Same thing applies to other discipline. The main key issue is knowing which software apply to you. It is totally wasteful when Mechanical Engineer goes to learn HYSYS, FLARENET etc. If you are trained by a licensed company on the software, you will definitely have enough material to read. There are many EPC contract going on. Having a knowledge on any of these disciplined modeling software will surely put you on good stead in getting job.

Re: ADVICE TO ALL FRESH ENGINEERS
to say the least, fear of the unknown is the major reason why engineering graduates who study core engineering fields( MEE, CHE, CVE, PEE, EEE, CPE etc) nose dive into an entirely different software training course all in the bid to attract job offers. it is pretty sad, i was a victim of circumstance but i am determined to make a corrective step.I am a CHE and i am going to learn hysys, which makes a whole lot of practical sense to me since i have a grounded knowledge and believe the job will come in due season. Thanks y'all, Nigeria, great people, great nation.

Re: ADVICE TO ALL FRESH ENGINEERS
Hello Chibuzor, I am grateful to you for starting this thread. I am an EEE, and I intend to build a career in the Energy industry precisely Oil and Gas Industry. This fostered my desire to apply fora Masters Course Work PgDip/Msc Oil and gas Engineering from Robert Gordon University. At the moment I work with a TelCo, Precisely the Highest Paying, with our National Color, since I wasnt oppurtuned to get an employment offer from the Energy Industry Players. What trainings do you suggest I embark on while waiting for my Admission. Thanks once again

Re: ADVICE TO ALL FRESH ENGINEERS
All these courses you talk about....How much do they cost...and if they are expensive as i think they are....then how do one finance it without a job...or...become a pain in the neck again to our parents.
Advice...pls

Re: ADVICE TO ALL FRESH ENGINEERS
ok, this was my exact responded to him.
Hello,
I will advice you to go for any oil and gas inspection course. There are so many of them with international certification. We have ASNT inspection, API inspection courses, corrosion control courses etc. Just go online and you will find all you need. Since you also have love for project management, you could go for PMP certification.
Pls note that trainings are very expensive, especially the once with international certifications and some are not even done in Nigeria .

I'll advise you to use your ND to go and run another HND program. This will take you only two years! You will then still have the advantage of a new graduate. The truth is that there is no any Oil and gas company that will take a Pass grade as a result. It is a standard! Even Lower Credit is going out! So the earlier for you the better. Your first degree is a prerequisite, it is not replaceable!

Re: ADVICE TO ALL FRESH ENGINEERS
Mr. chibuzo, what you are saying is very correct. I got employed last year by DeltaAfrik Engineering Limited (Deltatek/Worly Parsons). I did not get the job because I could use PDMS, I got it because I was a mechanical engr, with piping engineering training and I could use PDMS. So for any software training you are interested in, make sure you have sound background knowledge. It’s a pity we were not told all these in the university and there are only very few credible training institute in Nigeria. My heart goes to all you young graduates.
Good luck to all Nigeria University graduate. E no easy!!!!!

Re: ADVICE TO ALL FRESH ENGINEERS
Am also an Engineer working with EPC coy like that. I have HND in mechanical. but immediately i finished my NYSC, i got admission in Uniport and completed my Post HND programme in Petroleum Engineering. so i have HND in Mechanical and B-Eng in Petroleum.so for u those of u that have HND, i will advice u go for post HND programme and get ur B-Eng while still working bcos it is a partime programme, and B-Eng is ur basic as far nigeria school ia concerned. those that read Mechanical and Civil should go for AutocAD training. but if u are already in the EPC coy, u better go for QMS (documentation, internal auditor or lead auditor)training. it will help u very well. but those in Mechanical, i will advice to go for radiographic traning, welding, pipe fitting. all this training will put u in a very good place and sky will be ur starting point and not ur limit. but people ignore thise things bcso they are looking for oil and gas company. welders are the highest pay in the company followed by pipe fitters and radiographers. u can work in any firm. especially if learn combination welding, Caborn steel and duplex welding. u will become superb. great Engineer

Please how can one get this training in pipeline engineering cos i already got the training in PDMS but i know personally that there's still a lot to learn as regards pipe codes, joining techniques, pipe routing etc.
Without this training, one just cant fit in.

chibizor
Good advice, great minds and mentors.
The trainings are 'very very' essential and engineering graduates are very much aware of this.
But what of those who don't have the resources? Post HND/MSc is it small money?
Many graduates struggle but it seems they don't bother. Hardingworking graduates indeed. Abeg no be by our power only. Well we go dey try our best.

Re: ADVICE TO ALL FRESH ENGINEERS
I can recommend Gold Gate Engineering Institute for any young engineer who is interested in oil & gas design training. I attended the training last year and it was far more than I expected. Especially the AutoCAD, piping and PDMS class.

From all the replies so far, everyone is ignoring the original point made by the poster. Everyone's talking about how to get one software training or the other but no one is considering the prerequisite background training.
Please CHIBUZOR, how/where can I possibly get trained in piping? I have already gotten the training in PDMS and Ceasar II but just as u said, there's still a missing link.
How can I make these softwares work for me?

Re: ADVICE TO ALL FRESH ENGINEERS
The very thing that annoys me with all this certification and so called professional training is that they are so damn expensivve that you go thru all the headache of having to get them and then expect the juicy job to come. it is more like the whole idea of going to school. where then does the indigent come in. i am a mechanical engineering graduate and often times i wonder what do i do professionally. I checked out project management since i had smt to do with that. the price gets you all worked out. Is there hope for the fresh grad???

Re: ADVICE TO ALL FRESH ENGINEERS
what hope for the fresh grad cos there will always be one...
