Federal Ministry of Youth Development – Following the approval of His Excellency, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and in line with youth empowerment programme thrust under the Transformation Agenda of Mr. President, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development (FMYD) in conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) invite applications from suitably qualified young Nigerians to participate in the Junior Professional Officers’ Programme (JPO-P)
The Junior Professional Officers’ Programme (JPO-P) was established in 1963 to provide young professionals pursuing a career in development with hands-on experience in multilateral technical cooperation. It is funded with donations from donor countries. Currently, there are 19 sponsors comprising 16 countries from Europe and 3 from Asia. The programme is administered by the JPO Service Center in Copenhagen. Denmark and initially for one year with possibility of extension for another one year, depending on satisfactory performance making a total of two years objective of the programme

Content and methodology of supervision:

At the commencement of the JPO’s assignment, the supervisor together with the JPO will develop a work plan outlining the expectations of the JPO and the specific tasks for the first year of the assignment. The supervisor will provide day to day guidance to complete the different tasks effectively. The supervisor will be available to give coaching and feedback throughout the reporting period. The JPO will be subject to the UNDP performance management review and two formal performance discussions will be conducted during the reporting period.

Duties, Responsibilities and Output Expectations:

  • Support with the implementation of the IICPSD’s programme and projects
  • Support IICPSD in liaising with UNDP Country Offices, UNDP Regional Bureaus, and Regional Centers as appropriate;
  • Assist with the development and implementation of IICPSD programmes and projects on inclusive and responsible business, value chains, impact investing, youth employment and vocational training ;
  • Assist with the management of knowledge—lessons learned, the assessment of impact, the development of indicators for inclsuive markets assesment; This includes being responsible also for the IICPSD website.
  • Assist IICPSD in ensuring substantive participation by UNDP on Private Sector in Development issues in the relevant UN coordination forums and other occasions,
  • Assist with efforts to mobilize resources.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education (only Master’s degree or equivalent): Masters degree in: Business Administration, Economics, Social Sciences, International Relations or Development, Law
  • Work Experience (at least 1 to 2 years relevant work experience): up to 2 years of working experience in theprivate sector, development related field, policy research or field experience in the area of private sector in development preferred
  • Age: Must not be more than 32 years on the date of application
  • Information Technology skills, including word processing, database application (excel) presentation software (power point) and internet appreciation.
  • Language skill: Fluency in English language and ability to speak any UNDP official language is an added advantage.
  • An interest in adapting to varied physical environments; and a desire to work with people with different language, national and cultural backgrounds;
  • Evidence of ability to think strategically, work independently and demonstrate a sense of self-assuredness.
  • Respect for the UN principles of the United Nations Charter and the participating UN organisation’s mission statement.

Key Competencies of the assignment:

  • Knowledge of a second UN language (Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian, Chinese) strongly preferred.
  • Interest in and commitment to the ideals of the United Nations
  • Good computer skills
  • Superior writing and speaking skills in English and preferably in another UN language
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment and/or a developing country environment

Learning Expectations:
Upon completion of the assignment, the JPO will have / be able to…

  • Supervisor will provide on the job learning/training opportunities for the JPO throughout the assignment period. The JPO will learn from the different meetings which will be organized by the Center related to private sectorin development. In addition, the JPO training funds will be utilized for specific training programmes on private sector in development related issues. The bureau will provide generic training for all staff which the JPO will also have access to. The JPO will attend the corporate JPO training programme.
  • The JPO is expected to learn (throughout his/her assignment) about UNDP in the area of Private SectorDevelopment. He/She will be working closely with a Senior Officer who is highly experienced professional staff in the area of privase sector in development and inclusive markets. By the time the JPO completes his/her first year of assignment, he/she should have a clearer understanding of UNDP’s work in the area of private sector in development.
