Get Ready for the Diago Pan Africa Early Career Programme 2011-2012 (Application

Growing Together Pan Africa Early Career Programme

    Structure

Our ‘real job’ philosophy ensures, that you will benefit from authentic experiences designed to accelerate your career development. You will build your expertise and knowledge by completing three 12-month rotations within your chosen discipline. There will be opportunities to spend one of these rotations in different African markets.

    Supply

Play a key role in manufacturing, packaging and distributing Diageo’s products.

Have you ever wondered how barley, hops, yeast and water are turned into Guinness? Or where we find our raw ingredients and packaging materials? Or who makes the machines that can fill 80,000 bottles an hour? Or why each bottle tastes as good as the last one? Every part of our supply chain makes a vital contribution to our business, from creating brands to making sure our customers can buy the finest Diageo products whenever they want, wherever they are. Your three rotations will give you a chance to gain hands-on experience of how Diageo buys materials, services and equipment and how we make, package and transport our products.

    Finance

Learn how the figures can reveal wider opportunities for expanding Diageo’s business.

Diageo’s finance teams play a central role in helping our brands to thrive and our business to grow. Their role is to give the business the right information at the right time so that we can make the best decisions for our brands, from developing a price strategy to preparing projections for promotional campaigns. Your three-year development programme will see you working as a partner in the Diageo business. Right from the start you will be learning how to produce reports and analyse data, and discovering the wider opportunities that lie within the figures. We will help you gain a professional finance qualification and provide you with steadily more challenging projects throughout your development programme.

    Commercial

Rise to the challenge of making sure Diageo’s brands are available and attractive to all our potential customers

Diageo believes that marketing means being passionate about our customers – understanding them is the only way to promote our brands effectively. So during the first year of your development programme you will be immersed in Diageo’s sales process. You’ll spend time in a field sales role, building relationships with our partners and working with customers to maximise sales. Your challenge will be to help make sure our brands are successfully promoted, readily available and well presented to anyone who wants to buy them. The work is challenging, diverse and exciting. At the end of your first year, you will have an opportunity to review your performance and aspirations so you can decide whether you want to take on a bigger sales role or move into brand marketing.

    Human Resource

Ensure we have the right talent to drive business performance and bring out the best in every employee

Human Resources want to make a difference to our total business performance. We act as commercial partners by ensuring we attract and retain the right talent and build a winning employment and performance culture where every employee feels engaged and can release their full potential. We also look to proactively develop the functional and leadership skills and build our talent pipelines throughout the organisation.

This three-year rotational programme will give you real-life opportunities in both specialist and generalist HR roles. Your rotations could include a specialist function (resourcing, reward and learning and development) and a generalist role to gain excellent breadth in the business. This generalist experience will help you develop a complete understanding of policy, data, technology and the ‘employee lifecycle’, as well as how Diageo hires, inducts, moves and manages people within the organisation and the impact on our employees and line managers. Because we interact with all parts of Diageo and a wide range of third parties and external bodies, we look for people who are comfortable with building great relationships and taking a partnership approach.

    Support and Development

The three-year programme includes both functional training and leadership development. Functional training helps you gain the skills, knowledge and experience that will form the foundation of your career with Diageo. Meanwhile, we help you build your leadership expertise so you can encourage thinking, stimulate people and drive change.

There will be an induction event to give you a fuller understanding of Diageo Africa – this is a good springboard for your career with the company, as well as being great fun and an excellent opportunity to network with your peers.

During you first rotation you will have the support of a graduate ‘buddy’. You’ll also spend time with our sales force, out in the field, to increase your commercial awareness – it’s vital that every graduate understands our brands, our customers and the way we sell. In the second year of your programme you will have a mentor, chosen from the Africa leadership team, for the highest quality of support.

There will be opportunities for you to explore other avenues for development at regular reviews with your line manager. In addition, there are ‘connect and development’ events each year, which will help you raise your profile in the company and learn from some of our most experienced leaders.
