Cedarcrest Hospitals has recently been granted accreditation by the West African College of Surgeons to undertake approved training in Orthopaedic Surgery. To this end, the hospital hereby requests applications from suitably qualified medical doctors for three and six month rotation as trainees in orthopaedic surgery. This hospital is located in the heart of the federal capital and is a foremost centre for modem image guided orthopaedic surgery and traumatology.

Job Title: Trainee in Orthopaedic Surgery

Job Location: Abuja

Trainees will be expected to participate in the surgical management of patients in all subspecialties and work with internationally trained orthopaedic surgeons.
They will be exposed to the following procedures:

1.) Trauma

  • Closed antegrade and retrograde C-arm guided locked nailing of fractures of the femur, tibia and humerus
  • Closed proximal femoral nailing
  • Open reduction and internal fixation of tibial plateau fractures
  • Closed C-arm guided titanium elastic nailing of paediatric fractures involving the femur, tibia, humerus, radius and ulna
  • Image intensifier guided closed reduction and K wire fixation of fractures
  • 35mm DCP, LCDCP and LCP plating of fractures of the distal humerus, forearm and ankle with image guidance ‘External fixation of long bone and pelvic fractures Mini external fixation of wrist fractures
  • Cannulated screw fracture fixation under image control
  • Spine fracture fixation including anterior cervical plating and lumbar pedicle screw fixation.


2.) Shoulder and Upper Limb

  • Subacromial decompression
  • Rotator cuff repair
  • Bankart’s repair
  • Acromioclavicular joint excision

3.) Spine

  • Cervical spine operations for myelopathy
  • Anterior and posterior approaches to subaxiat spine
  • C1/C2 fixations and decompressions
  • 360 degrees fracture fixations
  • Thoracic and lumbar fixations using cages and pedicle screws
  • Spinal decompression for spondylopathy
  • Interlaminar decompressions and foraminotomies
  • Lumbar discectomies
  • Spinal tumour and Infections management

4.) Hip and Knee

  • Total hip replacement
  • Bipolar hemiarthroplasty
  • Core decompression for femoral head avascular necrosis
  • Hip arthrotomies
  • Total knee replacement
  • Knee arthrotomies
  • Pen articular (hip and knee) image guided osleotomies

5.) Arthroscopy and sports medicine

  • Knee diagnostic arthroscopy
  • Arthroscopic meniscectomy
  • ACL reconstruction
  • Knee debridement
  • Shoulder diagnostic arthroscopy
  • Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and subacromial decompression


6.) Foot and ankle

  • Surgical procedures for planovalgus and cavovarus feet
  • Hind foot and ankle arthrodesis
  • Triple fusion and ankle arthrodesis
  • Ankle arthroscopy

7.) Paediatric Orthopaedics & Deformity Correction

  • Ilizarov lower limb deformity correction
  • Ilizarov limb lengthening
  • Linear rail distraction limb lengthening

8.) General Orthopaedics

  • Staged non union surgeries including antibiotic bead placement
  • Conservative management of low back pain
  • Intralesional injections with or without C arm control

In addition to the core orthopaedic areas above, trainees will also be exposed to neurosurgicat and plastic surgical procedures as follows:

  • Trainees will be provided accommodation and a stipend for the period of the training.


Requirements
Interested Applicants

  • Must be fully registered medical practitioners
  • Must have commenced postgraduate training in orthopaedic surgery in a post graduate college approved institution
  • Must have passed the Part 1 Fellowship Examination
  • Must possess an NYSC discharge certificate, or valid exemption as the case may be.
