Questions have been asked in severally on the net about relevance the of ITIL certification in securing IT jobs or service management positions. Allow me to express some thoughts on this; though contestable.

Many IT job applicants have been given the impression that ITIL certifications have the magical wand to open up job positions with or without requisite qualifications in IT operational areas. This is not the case.

Categorically, ITIL cannot displace certifications in IT’s traditional functional fields (networking, programming, database administration, messaging et al). What it offers, amongst other benefits, is the rare opportunity of having an insight into what and how IT services should be delivered, supported and maintained holistically to ensure repeatability, availability and reliance.

Improved productivity, improved use of skill, experience and professionalism in service delivery are some of the trademarks of practitioners or where ITIL framework has been adopted and practiced.

In effect, ITIL complements certifications in all IT fields and it is essential in aiding effective management of other IT competencies and effectively aligns them with business needs.
Although ITIL framework adaptation in Nigeria may be slow as compared with western nations, the fact that globalization continually narrows the IT divide and brings opportunities closer to us is enough motivation for interested fellows to get themselves certified, not only for jobs, but for personal development.

While Nigeria awaits the tide for ITIL qualified personnel to become a perquisite for IT jobs, remember the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second best time is NOW!!!
