The Concept of the Police Force
The term “Police” originated from the Greek word “Polis”. It refers to that part of non ecclesiastical administration having to do with the safety, health and order of the state. The Greek word “Politera” meant the art of governing and regulating the welfare, security needs and order of the city-state in the interest of the police.
The term police has been defined in various ways, some of the definitions include that Nigerian Police Force is an institution as well as an instrument of societal mechanism of peace in the interest of the people since no civilized society can exist without a legal structure, for man is a political and social being and cannot live alone without social interaction vis a vis order.
Again, police can be said to be a department of government responsible for the preservation of public order, detection of crimes such enforcement of civil law.
