How to get started
Use of Tanks: You can use plastic tank to start a fish farm, These are enclosures made into container structures to hold water and fish. They could be made of brick/concrete wall, wood, fiber glass, plastic or metal polyethylene or rubber liners inside a support structure or a collapsible rubber liner. Tank material must be non-toxic and non-corrosive.

The interior surface should be smooth to prevent damage to fish by abrasion, to facilitate cleaning and reduce resistance to flow. Use of collapsible mobile pond is ideal for urban dwellers and a very easy way to raise your own fish.

The water in a pond must be of good quality so that the fish could be healthy and grow well. In order to grow, fish need oxygen. Fresh water can br pumped from the borehole or well.

Water quality
The two most important factors which determine the quality of the water are the temperature of the water and the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water. The more sunlight the pond receives, the higher the oxygen production. When it is dark, no oxygen is produced by plants as there is no sunlight. In the early morning, the amount of oxygen in the water is at its lowest level, as fish, algae and zooplankton have been using oxygen all night, and no oxygen production has taken place.

The oxygen content of the water is usually highest at the end of the afternoon, as oxygen is produced throughout daylight hours. Climate also influences the oxygen content of the water. The amount of oxygen in the water depends on the temperature of the water. Less oxygen can dissolve in warm water than in cold water. However, fish need more oxygen in warm water as they are more active. The optimal temperature varies depending on the fish species but the average is between 25 and 30°C.

Feeding your fish:
Timed Feeding: Research has shown that catfish grow most efficiently when fed about 90 per cent of all they will voluntarily eat. This optimum feeding rate is generally reached when catfish are fed only the amount they will eat in 5 to 10 minutes. It is important that the fish eat as much as they want, without leaving any excess.
Catfish can be trained to eat at nearly any time of day. During the rainy season, it is not advisable to feed too early in the morning or after sundown, because of potential low-oxygen problems.

Fish do not consume as much feed if oxygen is low, and the process of digestion increases oxygen uptake. Once a feeding time is established, maintain it. Catfish will feed better if a daily routine is followed. For the same reason, try to feed in the same location each day. However, you may have to change the feeding location to account for wind direction and velocity when you are using floating feed.

Feed catfish 7 days a week. They will grow less quickly and efficiently if they are fed less often. Remember: no feed, no gain; no gain, no profit.

Catfish are naturally aggressive and attempt to dominate each other over food. So, spread the feed out over a large area in the pond to allow smaller fish a better chance to feed.
