600,000 job seekers jostle for 50 vacancies in NCAA
Shola Adekola, Lagos - 30.06.2009
THE Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is at a crossroads, as 600,000 job seekers jostle for vacancies meant for 50 applicants into the authority’s directorate of Consumer Protection Department (CPD).
From the Nigerian Tribune investigations, as of June 25th, 2009, 500,000 people had applied for consumer officers job in the NCAA, whereas there are vacancies for only 50 slots in the newly upgraded department.
Trouble started when the recruiting firm engaged by the NCAA to help recruit qualified candidates, placed an advertisement for qualified young graduates to file in their applications for the best 50 to be recruited.
The recruiting firm and the NCAA got more than bargained for when 600,000 unemployed youths across the country responded for the job offer.
The department, which was formerly a unit in the authority’s Directorate of Air Transport Regulations (DATR), was asked to be upgraded into a full directorate by the Federal Government to ensure that aviation services users get value for their money.
The NCAA management was said to have engaged the recruiting firm to take the pressure off it from interested groups wishing to impose candidates on the authority.
As at the time the advertisement closed on June 26th, over 600,000 had applied for the vacancies, a situation which has put the recruiting firm under a tough situation as to how to successfully pick just 50 candidates out of the 600,000 to fill the existing 50 vacancies.
Even the NCAA management is not left out of the confusion as it is daily bombarded by telephone calls from notable Nigerians for their candidates to be employed without recourse to the professional recruiting firm engaged for the purpose.
