Who says NYSC should be trashed? Has it outlived or underlived its purpose?

What do you think guys?

What do you think about the whole system-Call-up, Age Limit, Posting,  Resumption, Registration, Kits And Kitting, Parades, Primary Assignment, Certificate Errors and all that it embodies?

Share your thoughts!

Why musy NYSC be scraped? am never in support b'cos it's thr only avenue that brings us 2gether in dis country after football. looking at the bodies in NYSC like NCCF, it's so 1daful. there are some poeple i met in thie Body and i can never 4get them in life and we were not from the same geo-political zone, school, tribe nor anything thing u can think off.
I served in Kano State and all my plan is not 2 come back b'cos it's a place to and if i didn't have d opportunity of serving there my mentality of killing poeple in d north will never change. but 2 b sincere i really enjoy that place.
NYSC program is a 1daful thing in d site of d youths. please and pleasev never touch d button of scraping it if you want the togetherness of this country.
Let d brotherl;y love continue...........I LOVE DIS FAMILY OF GOD

NYSC IS A 1DAFUL EXPERIENCE DAT ALL NIGERIAN GRADUATES SHOULD BE PRIVILEGED TO GO THRU. LIKE THE LAST SPEAKER SAID, ONE OF THE BEST EXPERIENCES IS WIT NCCF. I HAD AN AWESOME TIME SERVING IN YOBE STATE, A PLACE I WOULD NEVER HAVE GONE TO BUT FOR NYSC. NOW WEN I TALK ABOUT THE NORTH, I TALK FROM EXPERIENCE. WEN RIGHTLY DONE, IE NO WORKING OUT ONE'S POSTING, IT IS AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE.

What is the contribution of NYSC to the growth of this nation, what has NYSC added to your own field of study..  A case study of Engineering students...  Can any graduate of this field boast of  a complete skill...
Cant there be a training school after graduation? like LAW SCHOOL..
To me NYSC is just to show the world of my graduation.

Guys, Thanks for this discussion. I count it as a discussion bcos different views are needed. In my own contest is that, NYSC should not be scrap bcos it has alot of advantages and disadvantages. Although I've pass through it. my views are as follows:

My views
- What the authority should do is that, they should review the system bcos the whole system is now losing its objective and strength. Imagine, a lawyer teaching govt as a subject, it is bad and soon.
- Please dont discriminate bcos we are equally both but not equally talented. people in the north can be benefiting, what of others? so point of correction, don't discriminate. we both enjoy it.
- they should try and review it such that, people will be practising their profession when serving, so that it will serve as an experience when one finishes, he/she will secure job on time.
- guys, i dont av much time but i know, i have some little points, no matter what you went through during ur serving or u are about entering, dont look that side, some secure a good connection through it and some get a good job. Example a close friend of mine, serve at Kano, he write Zennith test at kano and pass, presently, it is there. a big boyz now. so, u never can tell what ur luck will look like.

I think I can rest case. thanks, and God bless. God will have mercy on us ALLLLLLLL. Amen!

I also serve in the north. (Katsina) inside bush where there is no network. think of that!

well from my own point of view,i think NYSC shld not be scrapped but the objective and aim of the scheme shld be revisited, and sometin u b packaged for corpers afta service so as enable dem to stat a little buz of their own wen the jobs are not forthcoming.Imagine a life wit NCCF.it an experience i cant forget.the rural rugged evangelism and the likes is sometin i cant ever forget.well i served in Jos ,precisely jos north where the cold weather really dealt with some of us tht are allergic to cold.

HONESTLY TO ME, NYSC SHOULD NOT BE SCRAPPED ALL. THOUGH THE PROGRAMME HAVE ITS OWN SHORTCOMINGS BUT WE SHOULD FOCUS MORE ON THE GOOD SIDE. I HAVE BENEFITED FROM THE PROGRAMME IN SO MANY WAYS. FIRSTLY, IF NOT FOR NYSC, I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TO IMO STATE AND ITS NEIGHBOURING STATES LIKE EDO, ABIA, ANAMBRA AND SO ON. SECONDLY, I WOULDNT HAVE MEET THE WONDERFUL PEOPLE I MET DURING MY SERVICE YEAR. THIRDLY, I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DISCOVER MY ENTREPRENUERIAL SKILLS I POSSESS AND THE SCHEME ALSO GAVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO REALLY WORK OUTSIDE MY DISCIPLINE. AGAIN, IT ALSO AFFORDED ME THE OPPOTUNITY TO PUT INTO USE THE 48 LAWS OF POWER DURING THE CENSUS. WHAT I THINK THE GOVT SHOULD DO IS TO USE THE PROGRAMME IN OVERHAULING THE POLICE, IMMIGRATION, NAVY, AIR FORCE, CUSTOM, SSS, CID AND OTHER SECURITY AGENCIES. THE GOVT CAN ALSO USE THE SCHEME TO ENSURE FOOD SECURITY FOR THE COUNTRY SO THAT THE ONE YEAR IS NOT A WASTE ESPECIALLY THE OTONDO CORPERS (LOCAL GOVT CORPERS). IF THE PROGRAMME IS WELL CHANNELLED, THE IT WILL ALSO SERVE AS AN AVENUE FOR NATIONAL UNITY AND WELL ROOTED ONENESS THAT THE POLITICAL CLASS ARE PREACHING. AND OOOOOPS BEFORE I FORGET. IF NOT FOR NYSC, I WOULDNT HAVE MET MY SWEET HEART THAT WILL SOON BECOME MY WIFE IN TWO MONTHS TIME. YOU ARE ALL INVITED. THANKS A MILLION TIMES NYSC FOR THE OPPOTUNITY.

I dont know why its still taking the government time to scrape NYSC. This is just one year of waste. Within this year you cant further ur studies nor work. Instead u are forced to serve a country that will not give u a job atleast to compenciate the one year of service. Please it should be scraped so that that one will be well utilised by youths.

To me NYSC contributes no evil to nigerian society. Anybody that says it should be scraped should tell us the evil NYSC is contributing to the society. It is the only avenue that brings people of like minds, status, qualifications, etc together as one . It gives you the opportunity of knowing other parts of the country, knowing other peoples culture and so on. NYSC should not be scraped. OneLove

To me NYSC is like a waste of time.It is just a one year enslavement just like they call it in yoruba 'isinru'. Well, few people might have enjoyed it but many corpers out there are suffering......and   ...... the government are shouting that we should be self employed and the alawi given is not even enough for feeding. Where are we going to get the capital to start the business........I beg Scrap NYSC and give us all the one year alawi after graduation......... at least to start something

I tink NYSC shud not be scrap but FG need to do smting cos 1yr shud not be wasted,to evry coin there is a 2 sides service year can never be 4geting in ones life, tink of the fun, meet people, learn new things, culture and memories to remember, the other side could be frusrating like small alawi, parading march, spending hours in sun uncomfortable sleep etc
I serve in Zamfara State and can never 4get the christian gathering like RCCF [Redeemed Christian Coppers Fellowship].NB NYSC is no more National Youths Service Corps BUT Nigerian Youths Serving CHRIST.

the programme should be re-focussed to enale it achieve it aims and objectives.
i thaught the police force is more corrupt, but just find out thtat NYSC staffs the most corrupt group or institution in NIGERIA. THEY PREACH SERMON A AND DO SERMON B. THEY ARE DEVILS  WHEN IT COMES TO MONEY ISSUES WITH ALLDUE RESPECT TO THE VERY FEW WHO ARE STILL TRUTHFUL TO THEMSELVES.
I SAY THIS BCOS I AM CURRENTLY SERVING, THEY SHOULD ALSO REVIEW THE BYE LAWS OF NYSC TO CONFORMWITH THE PRACTICE OF DEMOCRACY. MOST OF THOSE BYE LAWS ARE OUTDATED.eg HOW CAN ONE SAY AN ELECTTED EXECUTIVE OF CORPS WELFARE ASSOCIATION BE SUBJECTTED TO CLO WHO IS AN APPOINTEE OF THE A.I, MORE SO IT IS AN ASSOCIATION OF CORPS MEMBER AND IS AS SUCH LIKE A LABOUR UNION.

I've waited for this debate long enough. I'm currently serving with my wounds still fresh. Nonetheless, I'll bypass the place of pain. But here are some questions that will help us ascertain the truth that can set us free. Where are we heading to as a nation? Very often we sing our national anthem but deliberately relegate the second stanza that can bring a re-awakening to the consciences of many Nigerian youths to the fading chronicles of Nigeria. Let me go down the lines briefly.

                                 Oh God of creation
                                 Direct our noble course
                                 And guide our leaders right
Our youths the truth to know
This first four lines of our anthem embodies the dreams  of men who know that there is demand of God - their creator upon their life. This creator ultimately desires to direct all our noble course. But the question is: Have our leaders sought guidance? And  are our youths in search of truths that can set them free? Have the course of NYSC been directed to meet the pressing needs of the nation? And have our youths opened their minds to the truth of what is demanded of them at this time? The truth that Nigeria is not in need of interesting NYSC escapades. The truth that there needs to be policies that will promote the Nigerian dream. A dream to be sufficient technologically, economically, mentally, emotionally, physically. I hope by now it is unequivocal that there is an urgent need for total overhauling of the NYSC scheme.

THEY SHOULD NOT SCRAP IT BUT THEY HAVE TO IMPROVE THE SCHEME COS ITS BENEFICIAL TO SOME STATES THAT ARE BACKWARD IN ALL RAMIFICATIONS EDUCATION,HEALTH   ETC.CORPERS ARE SUFFERING LIKE PEOPLE SERVING THEIR "FATHER LAND" IN PLACES LIKE PORT HARCOURT,ABUJA  WHERE YOU CAN NEVER SURVIVE WITH #9500 IN A MONTH AND THE ACCOMMODATION IS VERY BAD.
EVEN BEFORE THE END OF THE FIRST WEEK,YOUR SO CALLED "ALLOWANCE" IS GONE AND YOU WILL NEED TO SURVIVE AS A "PARASITE" ON TO OTHERS.
IN MY OWN VIEW,THEY SHOULD ERADICATE CORRUPTION IN THE SYSTEM SOME SO CALLED "LI &ZI" ARE SO CORRUPT THAT EVEN SOME POLITICIANS ARE BETTER THAN THEM.
THE IS SCHEME IS BAD AND IF NOT WELL PLANNED ,IT WILL COLLAPSE IN FEW YEARS TO COME.

i strongly beleive  dat nysc has outlived its usefullness.instead wasting one whole yr,it would have been beta to use it to engage in more usefull things like  agriculture and research.this will go a long way to reposition our comatoes economy and thus resusticate it back.

The NYSC needs not be scrapped. Anyone advocating for it to be scrapped hasn't been there and can't know what he/ she is saying. The founding fathers had a goal when they established the scheme. It brings value orientation- through leadership and citizenship education and other educative/ training proggrammes that go on in NYSC camps- and prepares individuals for independent life after graduation, which universities don't provide.

It promotes unity among various ethnic, social, economic and cultural as well as religious backgrounds. It's good to go out there and meet people of various disciplines from different schools and see how you can cohabit, exchanging ideas and yet tolerating one another. I lived among muslims, and had no cause to criticise their religion. It was fun to really see them do their thing, have them come for Christian programmes and even go for theirs freely. Consider people having this experience and there will be a very slim chance of an inter-religious crisis. You needed to see us (from different disciplines and schools) discussing issues of national interest, sometimes arguing. It was fun I must say and I tell you people in our vicinity admired it. They will certainly desire to soon become Corps members like we were.

Going for the NYSC encourages individual contribution to community or national development. You find yourself working and bringing about positive changes in people's lives not because you're paid to do it; it was the orientation. I was involved in a number of different programmes geared towards development, teaching young people on HIV/AIDS, empowering young people and encouraging their education, serving in the Nigerian Christian Corpers' Fellowship. And even joining a professional body of managers. All these weren't easy, my joy when I look back at that one year of NYSC is that there were worthwhile achievements- I even got a State Award.

The experience in the NYSC may not be professional as most people have to become classroom teachers (even engineers and lawyers), even then it can't be a waste of time as a a lot of good lessons are learnt and the exposure gained is invaluable. It's not always rosy yet it makes us the men and women we should be because you leave and join a larger and tougher world and you are prepared for it because of the NYSC experience.
You won't believe it, I'm out of NYSC yet I sparingly speak the language of the people- of the locality where I served- with my family at home. It's fun for me. I love the people so much; that's not to say they treated me so nicely, I can't even explain that love- come to think of the programmes I was involved in and the resources I used (on my own).

The NYSC should stay for others to experience and they won't regret it too.

All U guys saying NYSC shouldnt be scraped are just saying so because you want to waste a year doing nothing and employers always require it for recruitment. The idea of creating it is not bad but it wont last because when hopefully Nigeria develops and jobs are everywhere, you wont waste that year doing nothing appreciable to your life.
Nigerian government spends about >400k on each corper and now that its 3 or 4 batches, imagine billions they waste which is needed in other sectors of the economy. NYSC IS A WASTE OF TIME GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, even based on the fact that NYSC has its shortcomings, I still believe, it should not be scrapped.

The fact remains that it cannot just favour everybody. Just as some are complaining that it is really a waste of time, some others believe that it is has really been profiting. I have friends who have gotten their present job, partner and even political appointments fron NYSC.

All programmes cannot favour all. I do not want to believe that it is a waste of money. There are a whole lot of people from very poor background that were able to start life from the little money they were able to save at the end of the programme.

Also, it has really been a major employment avenue for graduates who can take up posts like the Local Government Inspectors, Zonal Inspectors and even the senior officers. It has also been able to bring together graduates from all works of life to share ideas together. Some of our present commisioners and ministers were able to get these posts because they were deployed to the same state with the present executive officer during their service year.

So, NYSC should not  be scrapped. I only think the span of the programme should be reduced to about 6 months. This is to avoid the clashes of batches that is really going on at present.  Doing these, there can be a well planned programme.

Apart from bringing pple of diverse religion and culture together,it really is a waste of time.Cos how would a practical engineer be posted to a sch to teach whereas there are grads that studied edu who r supposed to be in a beta position to teach.am quoting from xperience
