EXEMPTION FROM THE SERVICE
Exemption on the grounds of age could be granted if one is above 30 years of age on the date of first graduation before Ist July, 1977 or from the end of I 984/85 academic year and any subsequent year.
Other grounds for exemption include
Previous service in the Arm Forces, Nigeria Police or National Security Agencies for at least nine months.
Those confeered with the NAtional Honors award.
Graduates in the two categorries above are required to submit copies of their Identity Card, relevant enlistment/awards letters to their institutions for collation and forwarding to the NYSC.Please In addition, they are to apply to the Director General through their Student Affairs Offices while the foriegn trained graduates are to submit their applications at the NYSC National Directorate Headquaters Abuja
Note that Customs, Immigration, Federal Road Safety Commission, National Security and Civil Defence Corps and other paramilitary agencies are not excempted.
. CLEARANCE
Clearance could be obtained if a prospective Corps member'squalification is lower than B.A. B.Sc., HND, subject to evaluation.
(a) Clearance could also be obtained ifhe graduated from a foreign institutiOn before the end of the 1974/75 academic year.
(b) Requirements same as (B)
(c) Completion of clearance Form.
LOSS OF DOCUMENTS AND MATERIALS
. CALL-UP LETTER
In' the event of loss ofcall-up of letter, a sworn affidavit, clearance from institution of graduation, statement of result or degree certificate, and Police report should be tendered by a prospective Corns member (who losses the call-up letter) at the National Directorate for authentication and remobilization.
LOSS OF CERTIFICATE OF NATIONAL SERVICE
The certificate of National Service is not replaceable, therefore this document should be properly taken care of. If for any reason a certificate of National Service is lost, a letter certifying that the affected Corps member has completed National Service shallbeissuedbohirnbythe Director-General of the Scheme.
. CERTIFICATE OF EXEMPTION and ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS
It should be noted that certificate of exemption is not replaceable. It is therefore very advisable that proper care be taken to ensure proper safety and security of the document, if for any reason a certificate of exemption is lost a letter from the Students Affairs Oflice of his/her institution confirming award of degree HND/Diploma shall be demanded plus a sworn avidavit and a police report, before the Directorate issues a letter of confirmation of exemption.

. TRAVELLING PASSPORT
Prospective Corps member who has lost his/her Travelling Passport should bring the following:
(a) Police and Immigration reports from the Country where the Passport got lost

Expectations during service year
. SAFETY MEASURES during service year
Every Corps members is enjoined to observe the following in his /hers own interest:
(a) You should not ride a motor-cycle without wearing a crash-hemet and approved reflective vest.
(b) You must ensure that you are in possession of a valid driver's licence, and Insurance cover before driving a car, and that the ear is in a good mechanical working order.
(c) You must observe simple rules of hygiene at all times especially.with regard to food and the disposal of wastes
(i) Cook all vegetables and fruits that cannot be peeled;
(ii) Keep all food covered to protect it from flies and dust:
(iii) Bury or incinerate food remnants and cans must he flattened before burial:
(iv) Akways cover and disinfect pit latrines, and ensure that whilst on expedition, the source of drinking water is not near where excreta is buried.
(d) You should boil all drinkting water, particularly if it is from a well, or if the source is doubtful.
(c)You should stay away from disreputable men and women particularly call-girls.
MATERNITY LEAVE
(a) Pregnant Corps members who hitherto had been receiving an allowance during the period of maternity leave, shall be paid full monthly allowance during the period and shall no longer serve any period of extension.
(b) The three weeks terminal leave granted to Corps members at the end of service year shall now be regarded as part of the maternity leave and shall therefore not be granted to the corps members referred to in paragraph (a) above at the end ofthe service year
. OTHER N.Y.S.C. LEAVES
(a) Every Corps member is entitled to a one-week convocational leave and twenty-one day terminal leave. Any other leave apart from these can only be granted at the discretion of the State Co-ordinator or the Director-General as the case may be.
b) Corps members granted Pilgrims leave shall serve the exact numher of days spent on pilgrimage starting from the passing-out day before they are due for discharge.
. SPORTING AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES
Any member proficient in any field of Sports, Arts or Culture is given permission to participate in that event, and to represent that State in which he is deployed, or any Club Organisation based in that State. The period of time a Corps member spends in representing a State or Cluba at such Sporting or Cultural events is counted towards the period of his National Service.
. NYSC AND PARTISAN POLITICS
Corps members like civil servants are not to take part in Partisan Politics. They are free, like other citizens to exercise their voting rights but they cannot be put up as candidates during elections to be voted for They cannot also mount soap box to campaign for any political party They are however free to engage in active politics as soon as they have been discharged from National Service.
. SOME DON'TS
(a) Corps members should not undertake unathorised journeys.
(b) A break in service may result in repetition of the whole service year.
(c) Overseas travels during the service year cannot be undertaken except with the approval of the Director- General.
. PENALTIES
Offences are met with commensurate penalties. These range from bad report to extension or repetition of service. On a number of occasions, Corps members have been prosecuted.
