Topic: MCSE/MCITP: Understanding Internet Connection Sharing and Firewall

Our world is becoming smaller by the day, and internet is mostly responsible for this phenomenon. What happen if your boss asks you to make sure 5 computers is set up with internet as easy as possible, how would you go about it?

We begin the class by enabling ICS on our ICS Host, which, in our case an XP and Server 2003 Computer. Our Host is the computer connected directly to the internet. Thus, 2 Local Area Connection will be available on it. Which in our case, we’ll rename as Internet_LAN and Private_LAN.

DCHP Allocator
The ICS host automatically reset the Internet_LAN IP Address into a Class C Address, and as a result it becomes a mini DHCP Server, which will lease out IP Addresses to the ICS Clients in the same class range.

After this configuration, all the clients connected to your LAN will be able to access the internet. What does this imply? The ICS becomes your Network Proxy Server.

The Port Numbers and Firewall
This is an end point in communication between computer devices. There are over 65,386 ports, among which there are 1024 reserved well known ports. We will use firewall to achieve a lot of intrusion from the internet.
